Asante Samuel released from the Falcons

Going against Matt Ryan everyday wouldn't reveal a tendency or two that AS could exploit or share with the rest of the D?

I didn't say he wouldn't be able to tell us ANYTHING, I'm just skeptical about how much that would actually be. Our coaches can pick up tendencies from film if that's all he's going to be able to give us. That's why coaches watch film. And as your post seemed to say that Samuel being able to tell us about the offense could be a reason to bring him in, I'm suggesting that any information he could provide about their defense would far outweigh what he could about the offense. He doesn't know their play calls. He may not even know all their different personnel groupings. His depth and breadth of knowledge about their offense is likely to pale in comparison.

How do we know he goes against Matt Ryan every day? Sure they do in training camp, but during game-week practices most teams elect to run their 1s against backup players and the scout team. Very few do 1s vs 1s all week.

And just look at our own experience with players from other teams. When we played the Giants this year RR said in a press conference that Chase Blackburn would call the play the Giants defense was running before they even snapped the ball. He couldn't do that with their offense. Tedd Ginn could tell us a little about the 49ers offense. Not their defense. I've literally never heard of a player signed by a team because he could tell them information about the schemes ran by the unit he didn't play on.

I really don't see what other people see in munnerlyn, to me he's to small and unskilled to play a genuine corner and even at nickel he gets beat by qbs who go after him, to go to the next level we need to draft or pick up big tall powerful cbs not the likes of munnerlyn, thanks for all you have given to this franchise, but I really hope he does not come back next season

??? he was one of the better DBs in the game this last year. 6 sacks and 2 pick 6s led all DBs in the NFL.

in the slot, he was one of 22 CBs in the slot more than 250 times but he had a 79.9 passer rating there (which was 9th in the league) and in all his 992 snaps this past year he didn't allow one TD. for a guy that supposedly gets picked on a lot, that ain't bad at all.

in 2012 he had another year with 2 pick 6s and he had only 3 completions of 20+ yards out of 87 targets.

i could go on, but you'd probably nit pick stats trying to prove that this little guy just can't cut it with the big boys, but he's absolutely proved he can.

he is a big play guy and a solid DB as good as anyone.

he's not been the problem nor would he be the problem going into next year.

i love the idea of a big corner, but munnerlyn has been big for us.

didnt Mike Wallace burn him on that deep TD?

Asante is a has been, in a young mans game. he should retire.

I won't argue with your stats and he did make as I agree some plays for us, but to me he's always a big play waiting to happen like Thomas is, I just don't have much confidence in him or most of that secondary, I'd rather spend 1-2mil he probably be getting if he's resigned on a bigger corner more physical corner.

Any info he could provide on either side of the ball would be invaluable. Division rivals snag cast off players all the time just to try and get any advantage they can. The Patriots are notorious for it. It happened numerous times this past season where teams picked up guys that were cut just for the week they played the guy's former team. This league is so competitive you best believe the Saints and Bucs will be looking at this guy.

wouldn't hurt. would fit us better than the falcons and since we have a much MUCH better front 7, it wouldn't be so much pressure on him and he'd do better.

if getts, mcd, and rivera think he'd fit i'd be thrilled. could be a huge boost to the secondary.

He would indeed fit the scheme, and does have actual experience in it, but there's a bit of a catch to that I'm afraid...

In Philly, McDermott's relationship with some of his players was more contentious. One time, questioned about why Asante Samuel wasn't playing press coverage when Samuel gave up a crucial catch, McDermott told reporters Samuel was supposed to be playing press. Samuel made no secret of the fact he was going to play how he wanted to play, not how some former William & Mary safety wanted him to play.

Though the Eagles qualified for the playoffs, a former member of the starting defense recently said that he believes that players did not buy in to McDermott’s approach.

“I just think, we as a defense in Philadelphia, you just have to believe in what coach McDermott preaches and follow the plan,” cornerback Sheldon Brown told Howard Eskin and Ike Reese of WIP radio in Philly this week.  “You know, sometimes I look back at last year, the season, I feel that we had some players that really was questioning some of the things that were being done.  And [we] never had that situation since I’ve been there.  And first and foremost, you have to believe in the system, believe in the plan, or you lose before you even go out there.  And if the guys can remember to do that, stick together, they’ll be fine.”

Sheil Kapadia of philly.com points out that Brown, who recently was traded to Cleveland, could have been referring to cornerback Asante Samuel, who apparently was unwilling to play press coverage in back-to-back losses to the Cowboys.

History between Samuel and McDermott makes it sound unlikely.  Granted, they both could be past that by now.

But then again, maybe not

The Panthers have signed several former Philadelphia defensive players over the past three seasons with ties to defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who formerly held the same role with the Eagles.

The list includes linebacker Omar Gaither, safety Sean Considine and, most recently, strong safety Quintin Mikell.

And while the Panthers have several holes to fill in the secondary, it's unlikely they would bring in veteran cornerback Asante Samuel, the former Eagles Pro-Bowler released Wednesday by Atlanta (link is to Atlanta Journal-Constitution story).

Samuel played for McDermott in Philly, and some members of the Panthers organization were intrigued in 2011 when the Eagles looked ready to trade Samuel after they acquired Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the Kevin Kolb deal and signed free agent corner Nnamdi Asomugha.

But that was three years ago.

Samuel, who turned 33 last month, had a solid 2012 season for the Falcons with five interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. But he lost his starting spot in 2013 as the Falcons went with young corners Robert Alford and Desmond Trufant.

The Panthers could lose two of their top three corners from last season. They're not expected to re-sign 33-year-old Drayton Florence, and will have to pay Captain Munnerlyn more than the $1.1 million he made last year.

The Panthers like the way undrafted rookie Melvin White developed, and are at fish-or-cut-bait point with Josh Norman and Josh Thomas.

It seems more likely the Panthers will try to re-sign Munnerlyn and go after a free agent younger than Samuel, who is probably an emergency fall-back option at best.

we could sign him today if we wanted him. he's a cap casualty. dont have to wait until FA.

kinda feels like he's one of those veterans that gets signed at the tail end of the offseason, but im not sure how teams feel about him.

id sign him now.
