The NFL - Welfare Queens?

That was extremely nice of him. We need more people in the world like that.

But he did that out of the goodness of his own heart. No one forced him to do that. That's the main point I am trying to make.

It's not a matter of being nice. It's about doing the moral thing instead of serving yourself.

In this culture of wealth worship, morality and ethical concerns have all but disappeared. The "what's in it for me" attitude has destroyed humanities greatest asset; survival by working together.

People can have a "what's in it for me" attitude and still work together.  I could argue that the "whats in it for me" attitude has been the main factor in our progress as a society.  The job you have right now, the goods and services you buy.. were those not made available to you by people who were originally looking out for their own self interest?  You shouldn't make the mistake of looking at intentions rather than results.

I agree that we want a society that is compassionate for the poor, but we might have different ideas on how to best enable the poor to better their own situations.

There's about 7 linked already.

Poor minorities may be ripping off the country for millions- Mad Hatter "LAZY PEOPLE LOOKING FOR HANDOUTS ARE RUINING THIS COUNTRY BAAAAHHHHHHHH"

Rich white guys ripping us off for billions- Mad Hatter "Well, I'd need to see the numbers. I mean who knows what exactly blahblahblah"

Just shut the fug up and post your link.

http://reason.com/reasontv/2014/01/31/why-no-smart-city-would-want-the-nfl

With schools crumbling and roads and bridges falling apart, is this really what we want to shovel our tax dollars into? And why should we in the first place, when they're making record profits?

The best reason I can see is that the NFL does a better job of presenting Pro Football to the masses than the schools do of educating people.

I think we ought to close the public schools and turn the job over to private enterprise.

10 seconds on Google got me this:

http://news.illinois.edu/news/04/1117stadiums.html

If you're really curious, look for yourself. It's about as controversial of a statement as "cigarettes cause cancer" and as difficult to prove.

This article also brings up the fact that the stadiums typically take up large swaths of prime real estate while receiving de facto rent subsidies, all while depressing surrounding wages.

Wooooo hooooo, NFL!

Do you donate all you can? Are people suffering while you have the ability to donate some of your time or money?

Do you benefit from the services or products that these billionaires have made available to you? I'm guessing you probably use a cell phone, own a flat screen tv, and you must have a computer since you're on this message board.

I don't have a flat screen tv because I think tv is a waste of life, but I do have a computer and a cell phone. I would rather explain why I have these things at judgment day.

I assure you I consider results as well as intentions.

The problem arises when the wealthy citizens who made their money in the U.S. on the backs of U.S. citizens decide to move their funds to tax shelters to avoid paying taxes that would help the entire country in the form of roads, schools, police officers, medical research, scientific advancment, the arts, veterans affairs, elderly assistance, libraries, space travel, tuition and many other things.

The top 1% pay fewer taxes now than they have since the New Deal. Yet we still have people who apologize for them.

At the rate the middle class is shrinking as a result of the above mentioned activities combined with unheard of deregulation we are inevitably headed toward a dystopic society filled with indentured servants.

I forgot to mention the attempts to make college tuition even more unaffordable and the funding to public schools being reduced in favor of vouchers to private schools.

The problems arise when government gets involved and interferes with free markets.

I don't think that anyone should receive special privileges.  This means that no one should have to pay a higher tax rate or a lower tax rate.

I don't think that anyone should receive special privileges. This means that no one should have to pay a higher tax rate or a lower tax rate.

Adam Smith the author of The Wealth of Nations" (which modern capitalism is based on) insisted that capitalism without regulation would become unsustainable.

If you think nobody should have special consideration concerning taxes you should study about how many of your tax dollars go to subsidizing billion dollar corporations. In addition to the several tax loopholes that exist solely for the uber wealthy to maximize profits so they can give their executives insane bonus payments for failing to do their job.

Don't you think that money could be spent in better places?

The United States ranks 28 out of the 31 major nations concerning the upward mobility of the average citizen. The nations who are worse than us include Mexico and Turkey. This proves trickle down economics is a hideous failure.

Credit debt is the only illusion left to justify that americans are living in a grand society. When the debt catches up again (as it did recently) more banks will fail causing another collapse that we the tax payers will have to cover to prevent a massive depression. This situation will repeat itself until tax revenue can no longer support the banking industry which will result in a massive financial meltdown.

That's what deregulation gets you. Even the founding fathers realized that.

You can substitute deregulation for freedom if that makes it easier to grasp.
