The NFL - Welfare Queens?

The laws of economics insist that for a person to become rich several other must become poor as their are a limited number of resources.

I have no problem with a person making enough money to become reasonably wealthy. I do, however, have a huge problem with one percent of the population becoming obscenely wealthy while the citizens and the country that helped make them are further subugated in order for them to become even more wealthy.

If you are worried about people "throwing money away" you should be concerned with the top 15%. They are the citizens that move money they earned in the U.S. to off shore tax haven where the money is taken out of the U.S. ciculation for good.

You are looking at a narrow interpretation of economics. For example if a person gets rich making a product that cures cancer does that benefit society and make things better for everyone including poor people or just the rich guy at the expense of others.

Michael Katz in his book entitled The Undeserving Poor suggests that poverty isn't a function of limited resources but one of distribution since some receive much less than others. There is enough wealth for everyone to prosper but it is unevenly distributed.

An article by Don Watkins entitled Why We're Born Poor and Why Some of Us Get Rich discusses that the economy is not a collective pie where a larger slice for me results in a smaller one for you. Instead everyone has the opportunity to make themselves richer by creating new wealth into existence. The old paradigms are not sufficient anymore.

Personal wealth that is hoarded once it has been taxed in the US, like all sports franchises, pales in comparison to the 100s of billions earned in overseas operations by US companies that are not even taxed. I read recently that if this loophole were closed, we could balance the federal budget in l year and  begin paying off the national deficit.

We agree on most points except...

Jonah Salk developed a vaccine for polio which was a major epidemic at the time. He refused to accept payment or acquire a patent for the vaccine. He said you couldn't charge money for something that every human had the right to have.

I wish most doctors.agreed.with him. But while vaccines and flu shots are provided free to them most doctors charge quite a bit to give it to us with the excuse of liability and overhead.

What does every human have to right to have?

I believe they have the right to their own life, they have the right to their own liberty.

But they dont have the right to someone else's life and liberty.  And when you say that everyone has a right to receive healthcare, you are assuming that they have the right to someone else's property , which contradicts the principles of liberty.

Guest Dark Knight

NC has some of the nicest road systems in the country. That's what the gasoline taxes are for.

People in SC love talking about their tax free gas but they have shitty roads.

I think it is obvious. I would not want to face judgement and explain why I let people suffer while sitting on billions of dollars.

obvious? I am not God, so I am not going to judge anybody. But a lot of multi millionaires and billionaires give plenty of money to help people all over the world. Yes there are those that don't... but 10% is 10% no matter how much a person has, if they do 10% who are you or me or anybody to judge that?

Do you donate all you can? Are people suffering while you have the ability to donate some of your time or money?

Do you benefit from the services or products that these billionaires have made available to you?  I'm guessing you probably use a cell phone, own a flat screen tv, and you must have a computer since you're on this message board.

Jonah Salk also won the Nobel Prize that year. His view was that if you create a medical tool to help mankind survive it would be immoral to charge money for treatment.

Right now you're not arguing with me, you're arguing with Jonah Salk.

Well since you quoted him, i assumed you were in support of his statement.

I am but it wasn't my quote. Can you imagine how many children would have been paralyzed or died if Salk decided to patent the vaccine and charge as much as he could so he could maximize profits?

That was extremely nice of him.  We need more people in the world like that.

But he did that out of the goodness of his own heart.  No one forced him to do that.  That's the main point I am trying to make.
