Fox presser

But why would preparation matter if the other team was just better? Don't change your mantra now.

mantra has nothing to do with anything I just try to stay on topic but that doesn't limit how many topics can be discussed in context. The point was for you to maybe come up with a legitimate point. if you want to discuss that I am fine with it.We can discuss what it matters but I don't think you really want to you are just trying to find that one zinger. Keep trying you may get there.

Broncos were obviously not prepared... another classic Fox calling card along with his total inability to make in-game or halftime adjustments. Did it occur to coach during his 2 weeks of preparation that the stadium might be really loud for the first snap of the SB so they should plan to start with a silent count? LOL

I mean the punting and draw plays in the 2nd half are only the tip of the coaching ineptitude iceberg that was on display Sunday.

If only coach Fox had a first ballot HOF QB who just finished setting the record for the most TD passes in a single season... oh wait.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching them try to dink and dunk their way out of a 29 and 36 point deficit in the 2nd half. I wonder if it ever occurred to coach Fox that they were playing right into the strength of the Seahawks defense.

Watch the sound FX episode, Pete Carroll didn't even have his headset on for most of the game... he didn't need it to out coach Fox.

1 punt. not an issue in the real world. I don't know what occurred to him but that wasn't the point you made. i have not defended his preparation which is why I suggested that it would have been a legitimate point. So do you want to make it about that? I agree they were not prepared. So then we agree it was not the draw play and the punt really?

oh you are trying to talk reality now... oh ok..

It was a great year for the Broncos they came up short but you have to give credit to Seattle. That's the reality.

I fail to see how I am a troll when I am only sticking with what I beleive to be true. how would that make me a troll. I give my thoughts and stand behind them. Just because you don't agree and can't make me agree you call me a troll. I wouldn't call you a troll or anyone else because of what they believe no matter how wrong I think they may be.

You are entitled to your opinion... you just don't seem to think I'm entitled to mine.

I acknowledged a few pages ago that we're not going to agree and that's okay.

For the sake of argument, let's say it was just 1 draw play and 1 punt... I'm not sure why it would occur to you to do either of those things in the 2nd half of the SB when you're down 29-0 or 36-0 or 36-8 or 43-8. What are you protecting at that point? You have the best passing attack in the league, wouldn't you continue to lean on that to try and catch up?

I didn't bring up the lack of preparation because I thought that was obvious... when you lose 43-8 there was a problem with your preparation.

Maybe it's semantics, but I would not categorize a 43-8 beating as "coming up short".

maybe semantics ask Elway he said it.

Early 3rd qtr you are having trouble moving the ball 4th and 11. If you are thinking about a comeback then there is time at that pt. Punt and try to pin them back . Get a stop and some momentum. it worked out as they did stop them and got the ball back. That was the only punt of the second half for Denver.

did you listen to the "presser"?

Of course Elway said that in the press conference... he's the GM and it's his job to try to put some sort of positive spin on it for the fans. I didn't realize you were quoting his press conference GM speak. What's he going to do, get up there and talk about how the Broncos were totally outclassed and humiliated?

Early 3rd quarter is was 29-0 and the Seahawks had all the momentum. A bold move was long overdue and it never came. Yes, they were able to drive down the field and get 8 points... that didn't seem to give them much momentum but at least they got on the scoreboard (for whatever that's worth at that point). When they started consistently going for it on 4th down the score was 43-8 and the game was over... but you have no other choice at that point so I'm not going to give Fox credit for that.

I hate to praise the Saints but Sean Payton had the right idea with that onside kick coming out of halftime and he was facing a much smaller deficit than Fox was, but the Colts were picking them apart and it was time for a bold move to change the momentum of the game, which it did.

the bold move was to do the right thing punt and get a stop. not mind blowing but it worked to that point. that is not a negative against Fox or any other coach.so to answer your original question that is why he punted.

At 29-0 early in the 3rd quarter there was still a chance to steal the momentum and get back into the game, but Fox wasn't willing to take that chance and pretty soon it became 36-0 and it was over. By the time Fox started taking chances it was too late.

Think about what we just witnessed with "Riverboat Ron". We started winning games when coach Rivera started taking chances.

It's the 3rd quarter and you have a 29 point deficit to make up... how much time came off the clock before the D got you the ball back? I'll tell you how long it was... 5+ precious minutes.

The Broncos are on the Seahawks 38 yard line and there's 11:25 left in the 3rd quarter, so they're 26:25 away from losing the Superbowl... if not now, when?

By the time they get the ball back 5 mins have come off the clock and they're still in a 29 point hole, so is it time to start going for it on 4th down now?

At this point the Seahawks are running the ball because they know the clock has become a factor, I guess Fox didn't get the memo.

What was the 3rd down play on 3rd and 10 that lead to the punt on 4th and 11? It was a DRAW PLAY. So how many draw plays did they run? You don't really want me to go back and count, do you? Forget going for it on 4th down, Fox wasn't even going for it on 3rd down!

If you trust your defense enough to punt and get the ball back (5 mins later) when you have a 29 point deficit to make up in the 3rd quarter, why don't you trust them enough to go for it on 4th down and get you the ball back?

There was 11:25 left in the 3rd quarter when Peyton last touched the ball, now there's 7:05 left, so more than a third of the 3rd quarter has gone by. At 7:05 we finally get the ball back in Peyton's hands and guess what... THEY RUN ANOTHER DRAW PLAY (that's two draw plays and a punt from the opponents 38 yard line while 5+ mins ticks off the clock).

I could keep going but I think I've made my point... any questions?

in a crucial moment on third down and you are behind on the scoreboard, punting means that the best chance you have for getting downfield is punting and the defense stopping the other team, forcing another three and out and a punt that may put you pretty close to where you were maybe picking up a few yards.

it shows no faith in your offense to move the ball the needed yardage. that's a confidence killer right there.

he had peyton manning...who was apparently the only real weapon on offense and the only reason they got to the superbowl and deep in the playoffs the last couple years...but he chose to stay within his comfort zone and put the ball back into the hands of the other team and pray that his defense would be able to stop them.

i've said this for the past couple years watching ron in year one and year two carry on that antiquated mindset of game management that says "a punt is a good play" believing that the "safe" decision was to put the ball back in the other team's hands and hope your defense could stop them and get you the ball back.

the problem with that is this and this is what i've been saying...the safest place for the ball to be is in your offenses hands...not the other offense, but yours. in clutch situations, esp. when it's not a home game, it is not safe for that ball to be in the other team's hands. also, the best chance you have to score is when the ball is in your hands, not the other teams. you might be able to get a pick 6. you might cause a fumble and score on the recovery. you might be able to stop the other team from moving the ball and put your team in good field position, but you can't count on that at all...in fact most of the time that's just not going to happen. if they don't score on you, they'll probably have to punt at some point and put you pretty close to back where you punted from...that is if they didn't convert a time or two and get a couple fresh set of downs. and you've succeeded in losing minutes and hurt your chances to come back.

it's a flawed mindset. punting in that situation may have been "by the book" but, as i also said on many times that book needs to be thrown out. fortunately, rivera decided the same thing.

Huddle rationale:

Broncos winning with Peyton Manning - "We all know Peyton runs that team and Fox has nothing to do with it and is just a figurehead".

Broncos get blown out in Super Bowl - "Hahahaha Fox blew it, all his fault, damn he sucks at play calling and can't coach".

We have the winner.
