Gettleman switches scouting services

Pats drafting has been uneven at best since Pioli left.

Agreed.

The point is, this is not that big of a deal. Some people in this thread are talking as if the scouting services run our drafts, and that couldn't be further from the truth.

It would be like a company using consultants to help them identify potential takeover targets, and then choosing to use a different set of consultants. The information they provide you is just baseline stuff, weeding out the wheat from the chaff. You still have to use your in house staff to do due diligence before honing in on your target.

If we suddenly become more or less successful with our drafts, who we have used as a scouting service will not likely be a significant reason for the improvement or deterioration.

Ultimately not, though I do think it's at least a little significant if it gives Gettleman the info he needs in a format he prefers.

I'd agree that it's the decision makers who really matter. You could give the same info to Dave Gettleman and Marty Hurney and get entirely different reads (and results).

these scouting services mainly just narrow the search down for nfl teams from thousands of prospects to hundreds of prospects.

the differences, from what i can tell, is that national (who hires their own scouts) look predominantly at measurables and stats while BLESTO largely uses team scouts employed by the teams who use their service and they look more at actual play on the field than paying attention to numbers.

btw, the reason the eagles left blesto was because one of their scouts had leaked their propietary raitings and info out to usatoday and were going to get fined and/or kicked out...but this was back in the late 80's.

I don't have enough info yet to give Gettleman my blind faith. This season was more about Hurney's plan coming to fruition. While Gettlemen freed up cap space and still managed to pick up fa that helped us become competitive, I still need to see a lot more to put my faith in him.

As far as the last draft I thought he absolutely nailed the first two picks but after that the draft is still of questionable value especially considering who we passed up.

Considering BLESTO: If BLESTO is such a wonderful agency then why are so few teams involved with them? We have had stellar drafts the last three years so imo there was need for change.

Some people say patronizing BLESTO isn't a big deal. I would counter with; Why are spending a significant amount money to hire them if they have a minimal impact?

Kenjon Barner seems to have been a questionable pick for these reasons:

-6 carries for 7 yards

-Small frame which leads very often to injuries historically speaking.

-We already had a crowded backfield both personnel wise and cap wise.

-fumbled a kickoff in a critical game alluding to an inability to handle high pressure sitiations.

My buddy works for one of the large scouting companies and he said every team utilizes some type of scouting service in addition to their scouts. I don't think it is humanly possible for a dozen or so guys to monitor all the talent out there. I wouldn't read much into Gettlemans comments.

Can you blame them when they have the formula to keep a good team without the scouting reports.  Those reports are basically like the robb report.  You know what you want and like but you just want to see if someone else with no attachments feel the same way.

And the Pat's are one of the teams that do not use either scouting service.

Take from that what you will.

Stellar drafts the last three years?

In the first round maybe. Other than that...

I think if you manage to get an all pro caliber player in the draft then you've performed your job well.

There were most likely two in the 2012 draft if you include Nortman. I have little doubt he'll achieve all pro status in the next few years. Alexander is another member of that draft that I have high hopes for post Hardy.
