DaCityKats mock draft 2014

looking back at the mock i did last year, i took a guy who seems to be the rookie of the year, and a guy who went in the 1st, and started at C for the cowboys.

 

 

now this year draft. several things i want to see done, which includes getting more talent at the skills position, and HOGMOLLIES. i like prospects from 3 areas in the US, the southeast, Texas, and Cali areas. but this is my mock draft, and here is what i would like to see.

 

 

1st Round Odell Beckham Jr. 6'0 193

son of a track runner/ coach and LSU running back. this guy understands how to run routes, by setting DBs up with his stem. does not lose speed in and out of his breaks. he caught 62% of his balls at 10+ yards, and runs routes on every level. he also plays a lot larger then his listed size, has huge hands and long vine like arms. went over 2200 all purpose yards this past year, winning the Paul Hornung Award given to the most versatile player in the nation. can return punts and kick-off returns. also named to the all-american team as a returner. i like my WR prospects to have 20 or more TDs over their college career, but since he has scored in various ways, he gets a pass. (OBJ finished with 14)  from New Orleans, LA. compares to Randall Cobb/ Cordarrelle Patterson.

i have a dream of him running that same option read where Cam flips it to the WR who motions into the backfield, but instead of filpping it to Lafell, it goes to Beckham.

 

 

2nd Round Bradley Roby 5'11 192

coming into this past season, he was looked at as the top returning CB. well he had a rocky summer, catching a charge, and getting suspended for a game. he then had a slow start to the season once returning to the field,  getting abused by Jared Abbrederis and Cal. but by the end of the season, he got back into playing form. he tighten up his technique and looked like the top CB he was once projected as. this guy is BALLHAWK.finished with 36 PBUs, 8 INTs, and 3 TDs. has the footwork to explode out of his backpedal breaking back on the football. willing tackler, will help in run support. runs a legit 4.3 40, and he is ideal for the zone scheme the panthers run. i think he slides some because he finished his career at OSU hurt with a knee bruise, not as good tape in 2013, and off field issues. from Suwanee, Ga. compares to Janoris Jenkins on field.

 

 

3rd Round Ja'Wuan James 6'6 315

first hog of the draft. this guy has 49 straight starts at RT for the vols. moves really well, footwork is some of the best i have seen in this class. can reach the second level, and attack LBs. not really know as a mualer, but does have potential to play on the left side. he is a much better pass protector, and his hand placement is decent,  so i can see that transition. i like his game 10x better then his all famous bookend Tiny Richardson. was having a decent senior bowl week until he suffered a sprain knee, and had to withdraw from the game. not worried about the injury because the guy started 49 straight games on a SEC team. from Suwanee, Ga. compares to Eugene Monroe.

 

 

 

4th Round Terrence Brooks 5'11 197

 

smaller safety prospect from Dunnellon, Fla. was recruited as a CB to FSU but has a knack to just be around the ball.has the ability to cover the slot, which is a plus since the scheme the panthers run sends the nickel on blitzes a lot. plus i imagine Mitchell coming back, and adding Brooks will allow him to play around the LOS more in running situations plus you can blitz him even more which is a plus. finished with 5 INTs, 15 PBUs, and 3 FFs. compares to Antrel Rolle.

5th Round Xavier Grimble 6'5 250

the most under used TE in the nation(besides the one from Baylor). has ideal size, to high point the football, and be used to as an inline blocker. has the speed to get up the seams but i just do not understand why USC didnt use him more often. huge target for Cam to hit and help gather in some of those high balls. is rocked up, built really well (no homo). finished with 14 TDs over his career, and would be a great red zone target. can play over the slot, and split out in the flanker spot. compares to poor man Jared Cook. from Las Vegas, Nm.

 

 

6th Round Martavis Bryant 6'5 200

double dip. he is ideal at using his size, and speed to climb the latter and getting the ball at its high point like in the pic. some have him going earlier then this, but i with so many WRs coming out, some guys will get pushed down. really raw, and will need time to develop. cannot stash him on ps, but would be on the inactive list a lot his first year like King. but the potential is thru the roof. love his ability to get vertical up the field and go get the ball. was considered one of the fastest guys on thr clemson roster that included Sammy Watkins. from Calhoun Falls, Sc. compares to Tommy Streater. finish his career with 13 TDs.

 

 

7th Round Ethan Westbrook 6'3 264

Mini Greg Hardy assuming this guy has a lot of character because he has a tat on his face. but he was the shrine bowl defensive MVP with having 2 sacks. dominated D2 ball, leading the nation in sacks with 19.5 in 2012. has violent hands, and has the athleticism to bend around the edge. has line up at DT 3 tech and 5,6, 7 DE in passing situations so he could not be keyed on as much. very disruptive player. Boom or bust guy from Oakland, Ca. compares to poor mans Greg Hardy.

 

 

 

didnt take another OL because Gettleman has said numerous times that they considered Bond and Kugbila as 2014 draft picks. but no that didnt stop me from taking 2 WRs. let me know what you think.

Would be happy with this. I read somewhere that Bryant and Watkins ran sub 4.3's unofficially sometime ago at Clemson. Bryant could be a nice find in the 6th. I don't expect him to run a sub 4.3 at the combine but if he ran anywhere in the 4.3's his stock would greatly improve.

Bryant in the 6th would be a great value. The only thing holding him back is himself. He shows flashes of brilliance and then would completely disappear.I think under Proehl he could become a dominant receiver.he has the skills just needs some guidance and motivation.

I agree, his inconsistent play is why he slides along with the deep class. But you cannot teach speed and size. I loved tommy streeter coming out of da u and he ran a 4.3 at the combine. But inconsistent tape.

Being a west coast guy, what do you know about big zay? I been doing some research but cannot find much .

I called Grimble one of the most complete TE in the class because he's got the ability (and past production) both as an inline blocker, and a pass catcher. He's been a nice safety valve for the Trojans QB's ever since getting to USC. He runs good (not outstanding) routes, has very solid hands, has some ability at the catch point and plays well through contact. He uses is body well to shield defenders, and knows how to create separation and get open in tight spaces. He was a valuable part of the Trojans running game (might be where he's missed the most next year) opening up holes with his blocking, and using his athleticism as a lead blocker. Really solid player, and if you can get him in the fifth that's excellent value imo. He could be a more natural hands catcher, and his footwork through his routes can get a little choppy, but all in all he's going to give you a nice balance between a pass catcher and blocker.

Man I love this draft. I am slowly but surely warming up to OBJ in the first. The more I watch him the more I like him. To be honest, I think his stock is going to rise pretty quickly as the draft approaches but there are only 27 players that can be selected before our pick. Hopefully he is not one of them.

Just watched what was available on YouTube on this kid. Big, strong and smooth runner from what I saw. Looks athletic. Surprised his name hasn't been brought up before. Obviously I only watched a handful of clips but I was impressed with what I saw.

Oh man, great job upgrading the skill players on both sides of the ball.  Mutual love of OBJ aside, Bryant is a pretty interesting talent with his size and vertical speed.  Grimble is a wonderful pick, really under the radar TE that is going to help whoever drafts him.  I'll have to check out Brooks a bit more, but really good draft.
