Summary so far:

-Run game was going well until Hartsock got hurt.  When he came back, his knee was never the same.  Run game suffered because of it.

-Thinks the solution to fix run game is get another young TE that can block and Hartsock isn't getting any younger.  Said we need to fix the offensive line with big bodies

-Doesn't want to have as many free agents as we did.  Ideally wants 8-10 UFAs.

-Real high on King, McNutt, and Travis Bond  (he stated he views them as draft picks)

-Very excited about Ron.  They think alike and have a great working relationship.

-Said most important part of coaching staff is teaching.  Used Lester, White, Klein as examples of how strong the staff is.  At times, we played 6 rookies on defense and ended with #2 defense.

-Nate Chandler exceeded his expectations and thinks he is a tremendous player/athlete.

-Asked about double down on offensive line "hog mollies".  He answers with purpose of free agency is the set yourself up so that you can take the best player in draft and not worry about positions of need.  Star and KK were not drafted on positional need but rather they were the top players left on board.  If it happens again this year, they will do same thing.

-Cam had an excellent year.  Disappointed people blew his "7 second pause" out of proportion.  No matter who the QB is they have to make plays from the pocket and Cam showed over and over again that he can do that.

-Really matured this year, not off field, but on field.  Completely took ownership of being the QB and showing the NFL what he can do.  He is our QB moving forward and I expect him to get a lot better.  Unlimited potential.

On Hardy:

-We're 'victims' of the cap.  There has been a smoothing out process, no longer 5-8 million dollar contract spikes.  Need to view it in long term, not just Greg.  We need to sign Cam, Luke, Star, KK, etc in the next few years.  We certainly don't want him just walking away, DUH.

-We are in conversations with Cam about extension.  But we will do things on the Panthers schedule.  Looking at our options.  The goal is to get better as a team, keep the core of team in tact, and still be able to bring in new guys.  Makes it more difficult if you let good players walk away.

-We hit on the 1 year deals this year and hope some of them return.

-Says watching NFL playoffs is more an extension of his job.  It's always a learning process for him. Who's in/who's out and why.  Always trying to get better as an evaluator.

His self-deprecating humor kills me.  Said when he and his wife walk down the street they look like the number 10, lol!

To continue the discussion at hand, I agree that he appears to know exactly where he wants this team to go.  100% business, which is what we need.

Arizona 2015 or bust.

Here's how marty's interview would've gone

"We didn't run the ball as much as we like to. This can only mean that we don't have enough talent in that area. Also we need to bend over and give Hardy whatever he wants instead of going over the negotiation process because I don't have skills there. Why do you think I work so well with Rosenhaus?"

    • Same... With the personnel the Niners had, that defense could have been historically good in the right hands. Under Wilks they were certainly good, they didn't quite rise to that level. Honestly, I see Wilks kinda like I see Rivera: fantastic person, decent head coach. Skill wise, phenomenal DB coach, so-so DC. His greatest strength is his leadership. Hard to find many better in that department. In the Xs and Os / execution area though, not as good. Bottom Line: Wilks is the sort of coach that needs a staff that excels in those aspects of the game where he's weaker. But, like Rivera, I don't know that he scouts assistants very well. That as much as anything might be why he's not in the NFL now.
    • Clearly the best outcome for us is a Giants W. A spot or two difference in the 4th round is inconsequential. Just look at the trade value charts. A spot or two at the top of the 1st means a LOT. A spot or two in the mid-rounds? Virtually nothing.
    • Agree. I don't think I have ever heard him say anything positive, at any time, about the Panthers. Best expectation is no mention at all.
