Peshek: WR Metrics 2.0

I mean I could go on about Landry, showing tapes and everything. The guy is a pure football player.  Can play ST , the slot or your primary.

Just watching the guy the last two years, hes impressive.  I'm not saying hes our pick at 28, but if we could get him in the second, or hell even the third, it'd be about as solid of a pick as you can make

I love these metric articles.  They are more fun numbers to stew on as we all play the "I'm a GM" game.

While I think the numbers are great.  The qualities idiot me thinks an WR needs to have to be great:

1.  Great first step

2.  Inner "fight" a la Steve Smith.  What I mean by that is can they win a jump ball/ball fight.  Smith turned those into great receptions. Others, have let those become interceptions.

3.  Dedication to the craft both in the classroom, and on the field.

4.  The ability to follow the ball and pluck it out of the air.  I think this is called high pointing?

The rest, speed, agility, hands drill at the combine, can all be worked on over the course of the rookie year.  Others are things that just can't be taught.

The 2nd gif is a great catch, but the defender just lets that ball come waaay to far back, going for the pick. If he extend his hands out instead of trying to chest trap that, theres no play to be made by the receiver. Looked like that was a very bad idea against a good receiver.

I was watching that game when Landry made that catch.  The gif doesn't do it justice.  It was ALL Landry jumping over the CB to get the ball and make the catch.  If I recall, it was a pretty close game at that point - I think AR may have actually been winning.  Point being....it was a critical drive and a below average throw and Landry went over the defender to get it.

I don't think we should take a WR in the 1st, personally, but if Landry is there in the 2nd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get into comparing the stats of college players too much, but I can tell you Landy has the "it" factor.....no question.

He's not making it to the third.  Hell, he may not even make it out of the first.

It was definitely a highlight play. Wow amazing in context, thanks.

but here let me show you what I consider to be incredible. You probably know this well like the rest of us.

This, to me, is one of the greatest catch in the history of the NFL. Not only is there contact but he throws Greer (regarded at the time as the best db in the nfcs) off of him in mid air.

I'm with you....but you're comparing what you're calling one of the "greatest catches in NFL history" (which I agree with) to an amazing play by a junior in college.  So essentially you're comparing something that's really awesome, to the best thing out there, and saying it's not impressive enough.

What I've always said I like about Landry is that he always seems to go for the ball.  That play was a great example.  I like the kid because he's tough and goes after it.  That's the kind of player I want on my team.

oh hang on sec, I didnt mean to compare the two. I meant that the catch made by the junior there, wasnt as impressive as it may seem because he kind of cheated for balance. Thats all, nothing more nothing less. It was a great grab. . great.

I was using smitty's grab as an explanation of what Im looking for when I watch guys play. Can they make the catch with contact and how do they handle it?

Guess I'm not really following.  Landry completely jumped over a defender to prevent a possible INT (or at least an incompletion) in a very critical point of the game.  I think if you saw the play from the front and in real time it would have blown you away how amazing it was.

Im trying to explain, that he made a great play but that it looks more amazing than it was because he used the defender's body to make the play.  The defender was not behind him, right? He was in front? Trying to make a pick? The defender didnt make contact with him. It wouldve been much harder for him to make the catch otherwise.

He did well to make that play, very well, but it wasnt like he got knocked sideways in mid-air and still made the catch. He was free to jump at the ball however he chose because no one was hassling him. Im trying to say that, Im assuming a number of people regard this is an amazing catch, when in actuality it is just a very good one.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.  There was a defender in front of him who was in perfect position to INT the pass.  Landry jumped OVER him to make the catch.  I get that you're saying it's tougher for a WR to make a catch if a defender is making contact with them....I think having to jump over someone who is in a much better position to catch the ball than you is an extremely tough and incredible play.  I don't agree that a defender being behind a WR making contact with them is a tougher catch than having to jump a defender who is in front.  I mean...how many times do we see a defender make obvious contact with a WR on a catch and it not be a PI call anyway?

These are the types of comments I expect to see when speaking about this catch. I understand what you guys are saying.

To be fair, for a guy his size, you'd like him to be faster.  He is somewhat small (6'1") and pretty dieseled up.

However, you say youre looking for a guy who can make similar "wow" catches like that Smitty one....There will never be another Smitty.  I feel like that play overall is extremely underrated in terms of greatness.  But there won't be another Smitty in a looooooooong time
