Feldman of CBS Sports "Leery" of Boom-or-Bust Benjamin per rotoworld

Not saying that Bruce Feldman is any different than any other analyst, in that he has opinions like everyone else, but he presumably knows more about football than many. Perhaps he doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. Or, maybe he had the balls to say what many are already thinking and just don't have the stones to say. At the end of the day, he has stepped out on a limb (so-to-speak) by referring to Kevin Benjamin as the biggest "boom-or-bust" WR of his draft class. To that, I say "Ouch!"  At the same time, it does give me even more pause than I already had about us making Benjamin our 28th pick.

Per Rotoworld:

CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman believes FSU's Kelvin Benjamin is more boom-or-bust than any other WR in the class.
"Benjamin will make personnel folks' chins hit the floor when they first see him," Feldman writes. "Thing is, he's even more raw than Evans and it took him a while to get a sense of FSU's routes/offense and he seems like more of a project." Feldman adds this would make him leery of Benjamin. The massive wideout will be 23 in February and slowly progressed before bursting out in his final season. He still has inconsistencies at the catch point and had a drop rate of over nine percent

Here is Feldman's original piece if anyone is interested. It actually is a response to a question about ranking some of the receivers, assuming that Watkins is off the table. One spoiler is that he is very high on Mike Evans, perhaps even higher than Watkins.

Anyway, getting back to Benjamin, the more I hear about the young man, the more I just don't think that he'll be our first pick.  The way that Dave Gettleman talks, I don't know that any WR will be our first pick. Gettleman has already thrown a little shade on the idea of picking WRs in the first round if you listen to his responses regarding draft philosophy. G-man pretty much believes that receivers don't usually come in making an immediate impact, so to think he is going to pick a receiver as raw as Benjamin in the first round is a bit of a stretch. Hell, it is a stretch.  Moreover, one thing that we know about Ron Rivera is that we always pretty much hit home runs with our first pick. We get players that are basically ready to play. I don't see Benjamin as that guy. He may not be a boom-or-bust guy in the end, but basically the way our FO moves, he won't be on our team to find out (because he'll be gone by #60),

Love me some Evans too. In my mind the best case scenario is he or ebron fall to us.

Gettleman never said he didnt like taking wr early. What he inferred is that if he does take one it's likely someone with a more advanced less raw game, ie they can run all the routes well. I could see that meaning someone like Landry, who I also like a lot. Gettleman said picks need to contribute early for a team to be successfull and this picking a raw wr doesn't help with that.

I've been saying this about Benjamin.  The system they run helps make him look good, not to mention, having someone like Jameis Winston throwing you the ball makes you look better than you are.  On the flip side, this is the same reason I like Jordan Matthews.  1400 yards against SEC defenses playing for VANDY...are you kidding?  Add that he's got the pedegree and the work ethic, and that's the kind of guy I'd love at #28.

.....matthews again drops alot of balls and half of his passes are screens. He doesn't have the upside of benjamin nor the freakish athletic ability struggled to separate at senior bowl as well. Playing in the sec means nothing if ur the only wr your team has and you throw him a billion screen passes.

I've been souring a bit on KB, poor hands, sluggish route running, lapses in concentration, not too mention he'll be 23 by the time hes drafted.

I think the poor hands and concentration are one and the same. The guy just needs a little bit of coaching. I've watched him from his freshman year until now and he's done nothing but improve. KB is your guy if he's there. He may be boom or bust but at the end of the first round those are the kinds of talents that if you wiff you wiff on.

    • And he still has one more win and a $110M contract, go figure?
    • People looking at the offense negatively need to step back a minute and remember that expectations were mighty low this year. We have a lot of young guys and rookies. And our qb is a newby in the system he is in with a new coach who has never been a head coach and signal caller combined.  This is a work in progress so only an approach which recognizes incremental improvement is valid for best measuring where we are versus  demanding immediate success after a 2-15 campaign last year.
