Are you kidding me?

Munny and Edwards were mid to low tier FA's who could not garner a big contract on the open market.  Hardy is exactly the opposite.

If you think Hardy will come back and take a lower contract...you are kidding yourself.

yep. it's going to be a flooded market this year much like last year. more cap space might be available, but there will also be more FAs hitting the market. many players will fit the bill that capt. and edwards fit as far as being the victim of a buyers market and not being players at the top of their position. solid players in a sea of solid players. they took what they could.

hardy isn't in that group, tho. he's one of a handful of players hitting the market who will still be able to get top dollar and with whom there is a ton of demand with few true peers to compete with in the market. he is, arguably, the best FA hitting the market this year.

there will be a lot of demand for his services and a lot of competition which will drive the price tag high. honestly, i would be nuts to not take advantage of this opportunity. moments like this comes along as rarely as hitting the lottery. first, how rare is it to even be in the league? how rare is it to last more than.  couple years? how rare is it to even get a starting gig? how rare is it to be the top free agent in the market? will there ever be another moment like this?

it would be hard to pass up for anyone. loyalty to an organization only goes so far when you are talking about making sure you and your family is taken care of.

i wouldn't be surprised to see him walk. in fact i'd be more surprised if we managed to keep him. and if he didn't take more money elsewhere  i wouldn't blame him. i also wouldn't hold it against the panthers for letting him get away when there's just not much we could have done thanks to the cap situation we find ourselves in.

Agree.

I see that tagging him is the only real way we keep him this year....and the financial cost of that is very high.

I trust Gett

Honestly the question is that has Hardy been a product of the system or can he beat double teams regularly. It really does help when Johnson and Star were taking all those double teams.

I think Hardy is a beast and is defintely worth that big contract.  And I would be all for giving it to him if we did not already have $15M a season tied up in CJ.

You just have to make hard and smart decisions for the team in a salary cap environment.....even if it means letting a very good player walk.

I think Tuck would cost around 8 a year for a couple seasons. He's 30 but he's also coming off an 11 sack, 2 ff season.

Michael Bennett Seahawks and Michael Johnson bengals are both free agents who would be cheaper than hardy and for just as good production aswel as allow us to improve other positions

I think Bennett would be a good-great signing, but Johnson I wouldn't sign. While I like the Bennett signing saying he would get 15 sacks and be in the top 5 in pressures and QB hits like Hardy was is going a bit far.

I didn't say he would get that I said he would give same sort of production! Lets not forget hardy had an 8 sack season going into last two games, Bennett would be a steal but i see Seattle bringing him back

I'm not saying Hardy won't get paid, what I'm saying is Gman has proven to be a shrewder more finesse GM than Hurney ever was. No way Hurney would have played the game Gman did with Munny and Edwards in FA last year. Hurney would have overpaid both again and put is in deeper doo doo.

Gman isn't gonna come out and say we NEED to get him resigned to the press and lose contract leverage. He will play the game and tag him if we need to.

I don't see this as a situation where Greg walks for nothing like Pep did.

Problem is that Hardy will demand 12-13M per season (at least).  We already have CJ at over $15M .

You CANNOT have over 20% of our cap space tied up in the DE position.

And do NOT say a back-end loaded contract....that only makes the cap hell in the future even worse.

But almost every contract signed by top tier players is back end loaded. Look around the league.

The idea would be to have Hardy with a manageable cap number for 2 years. By the time his large numbers kick in you have all this dead cap off the books we're being charged for guys like Gross, Beason, Godfrey or whomever.

Well, he had 11 sacks with trash in the middle last year. Not every DE beats double teams regularly either, its why when LT's are struggling teams use RB's and TE's to chip the ends and help out.

Its hard to find DE's that aren't so one dimensional, Hardy plays the run well too.

Very good point about the run.

    • I call bullshit. Brady,Manning,Brees and Burrow are all just ball distributors. And the better thier supporting cast and more experience they got the better they got. Thier best attributes were between the ears.  Now I'm not saying Bryce is gonna turn into one of them but what I want is for him. Is to have a solid roster around him and some coaching continuity too see if he takes the next step. Because everything I've seen and read after the benching is that his mental toughness and workethic are what we need in a QB
    • Many criticize our picks in 2024. I believe that most of them were picked because their ceiling is better than those selected before them.  XLs needs to learn how to play in the NFL. Once he gets up to speed he'll be worthy of 32nd pick.  Brooks, showed why we took him in the few games he played. The ACL injury really sucks but he can overcome these setbacks. Remember TD had 3 ACLs and eventually will be in the ring of honor one day.  Wallace will be a solid LB going forward with experience  Sanders, TE is a tough position to play. He a getting valuable playing time and will become a good TE.  Going down the remaining draft pics all seem to have a good upside. They may not be showing much now but they will start showing their worth next season.
    • I think he's shown enough that if a QB fell to us at our pick we'd either draft a defensive player or trade down for more picks.
