Greg Hardy says Panther negotiations yet to begin.

I remember the Peppers situation vividly...  I'm just saying, if DG let's him walk for nothing, it is essentially the same thing.  If we're not going to, or not ABLE to, pay him what he's looking for, there is no way you just let him walk uncompensated.  We HAVE to get something in return.

I really want us to keep him, but it's not looking good.  And the more Hardy says, the more it sounds like that hometown discount is long gone.

we'd get a third round comp pick and the cap space to improve  elsewhere and ensure that we could sign cam and keek to long term deals down the road.

i keep hearing about tag and trading him as if this is a realistic option, but can anyone tell me when the last time that was done or how many times its been done in, say, the last 10 years...and keep in mind that any trades involving a tagged player must, according to the cba, agree with the destination.

I don't feel like looking, but if you're only tagging him until you determine whether or not he can be traded, then it doesn't affect resigning Cam or Luke.  It's a short-term option to ensure the best outcome for the team.  If we can get a second or a first for him versus essentially a 4th round pick (comp picks are always at the end of the round), then we need to do it.  And I guarantee, there is a team with the money that would want him for that price.

As I said, I don't feel like researching it, but IIRC, it happened with a big name WR in recent years (may have even been Percy Harvin), and if I'm not mistaken, Jared Allen was on a franchise tag when he was dealt to the Vikings, but that was several years back.

All this "if they can afford me" talk is also coming from the same guy who claimed he'd get 50 sacks last season. I think its Hardy being Hardy. I'd sincerely hope that being on a winning team would be more important than a slightly larger paycheck. That's just me, though.

Hopefully he and Smitty have been talking about loyalty to the team you love vs. a huge paycheck.

We do get something in return.  A compensatory pick, assuming we don't go out on a frenzy in free agency.

Why do people think it is so easy to trade a franchise tagged player?  How long has it been since we have seen a player get tagged and traded?  It's not easy.  Who knows when Hardy would ever sign the tender and we have only until July 15th to agree to a long-term contract because no team is going to trade for a player (at least not a trade where we would get much) that isn't guaranteed to stay beyond a year and a player who has already pretty much said he will go to the team that pays him the most cash.

It's unfortunate that we may have to lose Hardy but it happens.  We do not "have" to get something in return.

Where did the concept that you deserve to get something for losing a free agent come from? It is called free agency for a reason.

pretty much this.

we don't have to get anything, but if you look at the bigger picture, while you lose a talented player you gain the ability to get more talent in and keep more important players.

sure, it would suck to lose him, but it sure wouldn't cripple us or set us back very far, if at all. it wouldn't have the same impact as peppers leaving had because this defense is still uber talented and this team is just on the brink of perpetual greatness whereas when peppers left our window of opportunity was closing and that kind of was a major slap in the face to a franchise that was falling apart.

I follow Hardy on twitter - and holy sh1t has this dude been making the rounds the past week or so. Doug Gottlieb and Jay Mohr just today along with some other radio stations I've never heard of. He's done more talking this one season on the Panthers than Julius Peppers did his entire career in Charlotte.

Lol, watching this just tells me that many here have just never been around for a major Contract negotiation before, I'd be shocked if anything gets' done before 1159pm on the last day before free agency begins. seriously  I don't know if he's going to stay or not but not looking at it being likely.

Where did I imply that it was easy? I just said it needs to be done. Just because something is easy (in this case letting him walk if the asking price is too high), doesn't mean it's the right move to make or the best option. Tagging him might strap us a while during the offseason with the cap, but if he is really looking for the money and doesn't have a problem with the tag, and both parties are operating in good faith, then I dont see why he wouldn't sign the tender early and give each side the best outcome possible.
