So is this out of line?

True, but Randle didn't bring people's families into it that I remember.

Randle was just kind of out there/borderline insane the same way Greg Hardy is.

He did exactly the same thing.

Best known for slathering vast expanses of eye black onto his cheeks, Randle’s more relevant intimidation technique came from research.  He learned personal details about his opponents, and then he barked out player-specific trash talk during a game, often surprising an opponent and, in theory, creating an advantage for Randle.

The guy did his homework on you,” former Chicago Bears guard Tom Thayer recently told Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.  “As an offensive lineman, you got used to defensive linemen

talking all the time. But with John, he’d read the press guide and find

some detail about you that he’d use during the game. I always found it

to be pretty funny, but not everybody did.”

Our favorite required little elbow grease on Randle’s part.  It went a little something like this:  “Hey, J.J. Stokes!  J.J. Stokes!  Are you a cousin to J.J. Walker?”

That makes no mention of talking about people's families.

Randle was a regular on NFL Films.  His trash talk was definitely out there, but I can't recall seeing a time when it went to that area.

The quote says Randle made cousin jokes...that's about as harmful as Knighton saying he would find out how many siblings Unger had. It also says Randle would find out anything he could about his opponent. Explain to me how that is different than what Knighton said other than you were starting from a premise of not liking Knighton and admiring Randle?

NFL Films is edited.

The quote says he asked J J Stokes if he was a cousin of J J Walker.  I'm guessing you don't get the reference, but I can tell you for certain that's not exactly the equivalent of bringing up someone's mama.

NFL Films was bleeped, but they didn't shy away from showing what people said (that was the point).

As to what Terrance Knighton will do with whatever information he looks up?  That's unknown at this point.  The question is whether bringing someone's family up in trash talk is okay or crosses the line.

I don't know for sure, I've just seen interviews where he said he researched everything about his opponents background and such. He would look at college bio's etc.
