Did John Fox take a swipe at the Panthers?

Give it up for Foxy, not many coaches have taken more than one team to a SB.

Still true (at least to date) that no one who was successful with his first squad has ever been able to duplicate that success with their later ones.

Fox won't be the one to break that trend since the Panthers lost their try.  I suppose you could say that bodes well for him now

I see no dig.

But people are gonna see what they want to see.

I think that's the thing.

In fairness to Gantt, I'd say it's the kind of comment that could be seen as a swipe if you were disposed to think that's what Fox wanted to do.  And given that Fox and the Panthers didn't exactly part on the best of terms, it's not a huge stretch.

It is, however, also true that when it came to press comments, Fox worked as hard as anyone to say nothing that could be used as bulletin board material.  Plus you could rightly question why he'd still be angry about prior events given that he's doing pretty well for himself in the aftermath of it all.

So ultimately, it comes down to what you think about Fox.  Yeah it could be a subtle dig, and I'm sure some will take it as such.  However, since we've also now been successful minus Fox, there's no real reason to let it piss you off.

I don't think John Fox is doing anything wrong.  I think he just trying to be professional.  He lives in Charlotte, and up until this point he's the best coach we've ever had.   I don't blame him however for not living in the past when his team is in the Superbowl.  We've gotten lucky that Rivera has worked out, but JR canned the wrong guy....should have been Hurney all along.

This, Hurney was the true fuger who was bringing down this organization. Fox had to go, but Hurney had to go with him as well.

No coach in the league, save for belicheck, could salvage the 2010 roster into a winner.

Well, that's kind of "Question #2", isn't it?

If you interpret this as a shot across the bow, does Fox have a valid reason to take such a shot?

Yes, and if you look at it from his perspective, he probably does.  However, I think the statement was more about him than this organization--just saying that he took a team to its only Super Bowl--

I like Fox..  Sure, he only went to the playoffs 3 times as a Panther, but his productivity suffered when he had to start playing Hurney players. The Super Bowl team featured players who were not Hurney's for the most part.  Not that Hurney was always that bad in the draft but he was terrible at certain key positions (WR) and pretty much ignored others (DT and before Cam, QB,).

I also think that Fox had to think that JR had lost his mind, and to some degree he was right.  WHen Fox became a lame duck because Chicken Little sent the organization to the bomb shelter, Hurney was left with no input from coaches in the draft.  Imagine entering a lame duck year and your drafted players are

First round:  Traded for a player who would quickly bust here

Second round:  A QB who was passed over TWICE in the draft by the Chiefs and the Vikings, 2 teams desperate for a QB.

Third round:  Another WR with questionable skills (following in the Keary Colbert, Dwayne Jarrett mold)

TRADE:  Third Round:  A small-school QB to run the wildcat, catch punts, and develop into a slot WR in three or four years.

Fourth round: A LB/DE who was a nice fit for a 3-4 defense

Fox needed a good draft, specifically a DT, WR, and CB, and he got that.  It had to seem like a slap in the face.  I watched Fox at OTAs and at Spartanburg a time or two and his body language strongly suggested that he did not like Clausen at all.  If you remember, he was buried on the depth chart.  That was his shot at the organization and Marty Hurney.  I even saw Fox watch Edwards drop a punt from the JUGS machine.  Fox turned away and shook his head from side to side with a sarcastic smile on his face.  That said it all.

Gantt's wife was my assistant principal when I was in middle school. I promise you'd be bitter too.

Discipline problem, were you?  Kidding.  Remember that Gantt is no longer with the Observer and consider the methods and tactics of the people he works for now--a bit slimy.

I also think that Gantt may have a beef with the Panthers because I detected some hostility toward him during the infamous PIE CHART presser.   It was not long after Richardson got irked at DG during that time that he was reassigned to cover Intramural Volleyball at Winthrop.
