Did John Fox take a swipe at the Panthers?

My read would be this part...

Yeah that was a swipe. He knows how many super bowls to which we have been.

But as far as swipes go it is pretty darn subtle.

I was one of the only guys on this forum 3 years ago saying Fox was a good coach and predicting he would go to another head coaching job. He is one of the good ones.

I don't think John Fox is doing anything wrong. I think he just trying to be professional. He lives in Charlotte, and up until this point he's the best coach we've ever had. I don't blame him however for not living in the past when his team is in the Superbowl. We've gotten lucky that Rivera has worked out, but JR canned the wrong guy....should have been Hurney all along.

I honesty believe the best record we would have had this year would be 9-7 under Foxball. I really loved some of the Riverboat calls and I honestly think they won us multiple games.

“I had good players in Carolina. I think that was the only Super Bowl they’ve ever been to,” he said. “It was a great team, great locker room, as you’d expect. I think all these are different. This time of year from now, I’ll have a completely different team. It’s just the way of the National Football League. Coaches change teams. Players change teams.

“I’m just really soaking this one in. It’s a great bunch. I’m very proud of this bunch, just like I was with the Carolina team. So I’ve enjoyed, really, all my football teams and I think you get better. I think the more experience, or the more you do it, the better you get. You should, whether it’s your job or my job.”

so where's the swipe

That part of his comment was certainly, seems as if  he was trying to make a point. Could have been a swipe at the Panthers..also may have been trying to prove he did something exceptional. Elway and especially Manning are getting more credit for the Broncos success than Foxy is.  He might just be trying to get people to think he is a great coach.

I'd say most objective people (i.e. members of any fanbase outside the Panthers and Broncos) already think he's a great coach.  At least that's my read.  Granted, it's a subject of much debate on this forum.  I would say the question of how much of his success is because of Peyton is a valid one.

One thing I think can rightly be said here is that Fox was successful here, but also flawed.  He absolutely made some coaching decisions that cost us games (most famously the way he defended Fitzgerald in the Cardinals playoff game) but you can't argue that he won us plenty of games with his coaching too.

Truthfully, the ultimate answer regarding Fox and the Panthers is that they needed to part ways.  This is one divorce that was rightly the best option for both parties.

As far as the rest: That debate is ongoing.  I have my own opinions, but I don't worry that much about "what might have been" myself because I think what did happen was for the best.

all in all i think fox is a good coach whose time was over here much like dungy in tampa.  he lost the fans, lost the organization, and lost the team.  he has clearly defined strengths and weaknesses and will go down with his ship when it comes to his philosophy (if given the power to do so) which is what keeps him out of the belichick, payton, etc. echelon.

what provokes the kind of reaction you see on this board is the usual shitposting from the usual crew of mouthbreathers crowing about fox's super bowl appearance as if it validates their litany of horrible opinions.

In Gantt's mind, here...

That's assuming I'm reading Gantt's mind correctly.

And if I'm reading yours right, you disagree with him.

yeah i just don't see it

he probably had such tunnel vision on the job at hand that he's not worried about the franchise history of what is now an out of conference team

When he got hired by the Broncos, I remember saying there'd be an absoute forum meltdown if he took them to the Super Bowl while we languished in mediocrity.

And Fox has indeed taken Denver to the Super Bowl, but the Panthers had plenty of their own success this season, more than they've had in years.  We won the division and came within two games of getting to the Super Bowl ourselves.  throw in that there are loads of reasons to be optimistic that this was no fluke and we're set up for more success in coming years as well.

Now if not for that success, then I probably wouldn't be on here right now because this place would likely be an unholy s--t storm.  Thankfully, it isn't.  Yeah, there are still some people pissed at Fox, but it could have been a lot worse.

I had heard a rumor a few years back that when he didn't get an extension, Fox's wife made some rather loud complaints inside the Panthers offices.  Whether or not that's actually true?  No idea, but it's plausible.  And if true, it's also the kind of thing that can really sour a relationship between employer and employee.

At this point though?  Pure rumor.  No corroboration,  Fodder for speculation but little else.

I wonder if Jerry Jones will ever realize that its all his fault

If he is anything like the wife, it is never going to be his fault.

I remember hearing this as well. Not sure where...but it was out there. Kinda met her once. She was...different.
