Gettlemen Draft philosophy

I think some people get a little carried away with the whole BPA concept.  No one drafts PURELY on BPA.  For example, we're not taking a QB at #28.  I don't care who is there on the board.

You have to look at it from a team building perspective.

For one, quarterback is kind of a different position.  In a given year, you're either open to taking a quarterback or you're not.  If the answer is no, your draft board will reflect it.  Similar with kicker and punter, but obviously on a lesser scale.

As far as everywhere else, when they're building a draft board, need factors into the ranking.  So you get "hey this guy's great but we don't need him, so we'll downgrade him".  That way your draft board already accounts for that.  And it tends to play out in the draft that since what you don't need, someone else does, the temptation to take a guy at a position where you're already strong usually takes care of itself.

Mind you, I wouldn't see them dropping someone all that drastically, and that's really not a bad thing because you always need depth.  Heck, who knew last April that we'd actually need a guy like A J Klein to play this season?

yeah, i've always taken BPA to mean the best player available on their board. teams rank players differently.

one team could have Sammy Watkins at the top of their board, but another team have Mike Evans because they like him better

i'm going to start locking threads that offer only a title and a link to something.

quit being so lazy and either post an excerpt and/or some kind of thoughts/summary.

if you have the ability to start a thread or post a link or post in other threads, you're more than able to do more than just post some link to something.

In other words, follow Top Dawg's lead... :)

but i do feel this mean that gettlemen is going to go for the most ready day 1 reciever in the draft. not one with just upside but one you know can step in and make an impact right away. and as always he's going to set us up in FA as best as he can so we can get bpa for any so called need.

Exactly. I just didn't feel like typing all that.

Glad I could help

betting it was the Eagles

Definitely possible.

Reminds me of something from the article...

I’ve talked about it with guys around the league, and guys will open up a little bit. There was one team in the top five that it was going to be either Star or the guy they took. But they ended up taking their guy. And then he’s dropping and dropping. And the Jets are in front of us, and I said there’s no doubt they’re taking Sheldon Richardson. Even if you don’t have the inside information, knowing Rex (Ryan), he was perfect. He was versatile, he can do a million different things with him, and that’s what Rex does. And it was a great pick for them.

So here we see that we have a GM who actually pays attention to the tendencies of other front offices and coaches, enough so that he knew ahead of time who the Jets and Rex Ryan were going to take even before they did it.

I can't help but be impressed by that.
