Knox Bardeen of BR says we HAVE to re-sign Hardy

top dawg

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like we have leverage in the Hardy situation and by retaining him we restrict ourselves from doing a lot with the rest of the team.  It's a balancing act and SCP is right earlier in the thread.  If the $$ we need to give Hardy puts a speed bump for building this team longterm, we've gotta do what we've gotta do.

You sign him to the Franchise Tag and then trade him.

The new long term contract is with the new team....not us.

When he signs that tag money becomes guaranteed...by us. And nobody is going to give up picks and pay him that much. That would be stupid.

Yep.  With the tag, we're taking the risk and assuming a team is going to bite....and with that gamble could come 60+% of our available cap space.

At the same time though, I think he's worth a 1st.  Being a 25 yo DE coming off a 16 sack season warrants a 1st round pick in my book.  If he doesn't, I don't know what does.

Because then you are in cap hell in the future.

Back end loading huge contracts eventually catch up with you.

I agree totally. But I'm taking about fair backloaded money, say hardy wants $10-12 mill as has been reported, why not offer him $6-8 guaranteed plus bonus money for first two years until we are clear of cap hell we are in? Then year three, four and five he can get his money back by his contract rising significantly?, people forget but Williams and Stewart will be off he roster by then so we will have a much much new manageable cap space situation, difference with gurneys deals he backloaded contracts with no real brain rewarding on passed performance not anticipating future production, gettleman won't make the same mistake, my opinion says gettleman is just a better man to man evaluater of players

It sucks that the previous GM got emotional and signed mediocre players to huge contracts (Godfrey, Stewart) that are cap-strapping this team.  Hardy is a legit building block to a top 3 defense and now the Panthers have to let him walk.  Make no mistake, Gettleman already told us he's letting him walk.  "There's isn't a team out there that hasn't let a big dog walk out the door.  We are cap challenged."  Why the hell would Gettleman say that unless he was preparing the fans for Hardy to leave.  Cmon guys, who is that delusional?  He's not coming back.
