While we're all coming to terms with "cap hell"...

Don't have that high an opinion of DeBartolo either, and Carmen Policy didn't look all that great running the Browns.

I will give them credit for one thing though.  They were smarter than to run off their best head coach.

they supposedly helped push Walsh to 'retirement' to keep Seifert. They definitely forced Seifert out for Mariucci.

Not that you'll ever really find me pushing that the 9ers aren't smarter than the Cowboys.

If the Cowboys had been that smart, they'd have kept that team intact and just elevated Norv, I guess. Norv's not incredible, but he's better than Switzer.

From our own experience with Seifert, I can't say I'm surprised.

There was a story that Seifert went into the GM's office and essentially said "give me a big extension or let me walk."  They chose the latter. .

that doesn't really jive with them telling him that he had one year and then Mooch would succeed him.

I remember reading the story at the time (Sporting News, i think).  If i remember right, it came out after he and the team had already parted ways.  What really happened?  Don't know.

The impression I get whenever I hear players who served under him here always seems to sound negative.  In one case, it was a friend who met Mark Rodenhauser.  Rodey was really down on him.  Add in that some of Smitty's radio comments have been in a "don't wanna talk about that guy" vein.

9ers guys always liked him.  I can see where his experience here wouldn't be as kind, though I really don't care about Frank Garcia's foolish nonsense, that guy was lucky to still have a job.

Either way, 9ers did push guys out.  They just had a plan to continue success while Debartolo/Policy were there.  They did a good job of it.

Valid, though neither duplicated their success from Mariucci's time forward.  Policy flopped building the new Browns, and the Niners haven't had regular success up till the hires of Baalke/Harbaugh.

So here's an interesting discussion question: What team made the smoothest transition from the pre-salary cap setup to the cap era?

Does anyone understand the concept of unused cap than can carry over?  I stumbled upon an article about the 9ers cap for next year and saw this:

The NFL-wide salary cap is expected to be in the $126 million to $128 million range. Plus, the 49ers have an additional $2.175 million in carryover of unused cap space from the 2013 season.

But that money can go rapidly, especially with five veteran starters (including kicker Phil Dawson) not under contract and an underpaid quarterback (in relative terms) with whom they can negotiate a long-term deal.

From what I remember, we got to around $12m under the cap after trading Beason.  Does anyone know if we have any of that "carry-over" money?

This site estimates our cap for 2014 at 138,000,000 based on a flat cap of 126,000,000 which indicates we have roughly 12 million in carryover.  They projected we were 13.5 under the cap which includes the 39 contracts on the books and a charge of  $500,000 for 13 future contracts assuming a full roster of 51 players.  So the reality is that according to this site we are roughly 19 million under the cap right now without restructuring anyone at this point.

Gracias.  So if that is the case, it made sense this year to backload some already high contracts to reduce this years cap to get us carryover space.  I was thinking the opposite at the time, seeing we were so far under the cap this year, why not bump those guys money up to this year to free future cap space?  Why I'm just now understanding the carryover is beyond me, while I dont pretend to be an expert, i didnt know i was that far out of the loop.
