Horrible drive home....snow thread

Living in California, I have no idea what the protocol is on these kind of conditions. Do people really just leave their cars on the road?

It's no different than anywhere else and there is no protocol. If people are leaving their cars on the side of the road in 20 degree temperatures then the situation is critical

Girlfriend's close friends moved to Alabama from Charlotte 7 months ago for a job. They were not allowed to go home because the roads were closed by the national guard and obviously the horric traffic. I think she said they went something like 2 miles in 7 hours. Had to sleep in a wal mart and tonight had to sleep in his office. they have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. feel horrible for them.

What I meant to say was living in CA, never haven driven in snow or ice, are there rules in place where a person can just abandon their car on the road for a day?

Good question.

Around here you see people tying a sock or white towel around the door handle or something to indicate they left the car willingly. I think it is a "don't tow" request.  At least that is my understanding could be wrong. Also cops were tying police tape around every car they witnessed didn't have people in it in Atlanta yesterday. You also see police tape on abandoned cars in general sometimes or some sort of marker.

As to your question not sure what the official rules are. I assume at some point they tow it and you pay but now I'm curious.

There are some terrible reports coming from Atlanta, Alabama, etc.  How awful to be in that situation with young kids. Only thing worse....the parents who had kids stranded on a school bus overnight.  Makes my little 1/2 mile hike sound trivial.  I know I am very lucky.

I'm not there and I'm not saying there are not things they could have done better, but I'm not sure what they could have done to completely prevent this from happening either. Sometimes people need to take responsibilty for their own actions or lack of action and that goes for not only the elected officials but the citizens as well.

I still can't believe all of that went on in Alabama and Georgia.  Some heads should roll over that mess.  No way those schools should have been open Tuesday.

I drove around a bit yesterday and it was fine as long as you went slow.  I came to work this morning and it was twice as slick.  I guess those sheets of ice started to melt yesterday and re-froze overnight and it's like glass.

If you're in the Wilmington area, stay home unless you absolutely have to go out.

I made it to my office fine but on the side roads it's really bad.  Stopping and turning is very dangerous unless you're just crawling.
