Rivera signs 3 year contract extension

Depending on the contract amount and payment incentives....I will agree with you.

I just do not want to see us miss the playoffs and then have Richardson hang on to Rivera another year.  At this point it is playoffs or fired as far as I am concerned.

So if we're a good competitive team like the Cards who just narrowly miss a WC spot because of tie-breakers you think he should be fired?

Well.

Yes.  I think Hurney should have been fired and Gettleman brought in.  Fox is a great coach.  A players coach.

But, that's not my gripe with the 3 year Rivera deal...why don't we let the guy earn it?  Extend 1 year and then give him the mega contract in 2015 once we go to the playoffs again?

Because it also affects other aspects of the organization. It impacts our ability to bring in new coaches who know the regime has more than 2 years. It'll impact the way free agents view the franchise if they're coming into an organization that has stability in its head coach. It's not just about Rivera. This, like every decision Gettleman has and will make, is about the team and is about the organization.

And I love how you assume Tampa and Atlanta will "wake up" next year and that somehow means we won't be able to compete with them. That's a baseless assumption and fails for so many reasons. Anyways, the best teams don't depend on the failure of others to make themselves successful.

Absolutely.

My biggest concern with Rivera is that he rarely wins the tough games.  If we miss the playoffs and accept missing the playoffs because we were close, then we are no better than Arizona, who I would never want to be like...PERIOD!

To anyone doubting the move:

- Our defense sucked giant donkey ******* when he got here

- Our defense is now so elite that two UDFA rookies could spend a lot of time in the secondary and still do well

- Our offense has transitioned from relying on gadgetry to score to utilizing lesser talent smartly to win games, while our QB has grown into a franchise centerpiece

Considering the wreck he inherited and the strength of our division Rivera has improved and built a team with an elite identity if it can build on the foundation. He has earned the right to continue the job he started.

We had a coach who's now in the Super Bowl that we didn't extend without back to back winning seasons. Lol. What exactly does this move do for us?

If anything I hope it teaches JR that, yes, you do have to actually sign some free agents for a team to be successful. You can't expect any coach to come in and turn a bunch of fourth round division II scrubs into all stars.

Why don't you just copy and paste the entire Carolina Panthers Staff page concerning Gettleman, rather than leave out the important info. He was a scout for Buffalo and Denver and not a GM in New York. No reason to manipulate the facts, but yes Gettleman has done a great job here in Carolina and if it was about extending Gettleman than by all means.

Rivera needed to prove it again. He would not have been a lame duck coach, because he would have been extended if he did it again.

Real question. What happens when Tampa and Atlanta wake up next year? Do we get those 4 easy wins and make the playoffs?

1 year is all he deserved. PERIOD!

Gettleman is the GM now, and has done pretty well so far for a guy you said doesn't understand 'winning mentality' (you've got pretty much nothing to back that up).

As to Rivera, he went 12-4, won the division and got a playoff bye with a team that was undermanned at three key positions. Part of that success owed to his building the best defense in the league.

Under his watch, the team has improved every season and made a big jump this year after ownership hired someone who actually knows how to scout for talent to replace a sportswriter who was in over his head.

I'm good with three years.

Rookie head coaches need time to grow. The evaluation process starts now, year 4 and will continue through year 5. It's a good contract to facilitate continued growth. Ron needs to show he can coach a team that has had a little success. If we regress next year he gets one more to show he is still growing. Firing coaches often is a bad idea. Look no farther than the Browns for an example of what that looks like.

Falcons and Bucs were 4-12.

We only beat 4 teams with a winning record....so....we actually played a very weak schedule.

Wake up.

Um....we only? Yeah, that is about the norm for what good teams do.

Every team faces teams like the Falcons in a season.

Not every team beats 3 different 11 plus win teams.

It wasn't a weak schedule. Yes, the division wasn't what we thought it would be.....but that doesn't equate to a weak schedule.

You can actually look up who played a weak schedule
