Rivera signs 3 year contract extension

Too many years for a coach that was supposed to be fired four weeks into the season and then flamed out of his first playoff game. Probably not a popular opinion around here. Let's hope he can follow up.

The rumor that the Panthers were looking around for a new HC and were going to fire Ron Rivera needs to be put to rest. In an article a couple of days ago Gettleman  said that was not and had never been the case and that he did not operate that way. He was really angered and upset that someone had started said rumor and cast him in that kind of light.

I'm not sold on his decision making. He started just going for it out of fear, not because he truly believed he should go for it. Now that he's safe again I'm not sure he'll be as gutsy when it comes to some of these calls.

I tend to agree that the gambling mentality started from desperation more than inspiration but he got the job done and is a better coach than he was three years ago. You don't win 11 of the last 12 by being lucky.  RR earned the extension and a one year extension would have been pointless but I think the jury is still out his true head coaching ability. This upcoming season is going to show us for certain whether or not Ron has the goods. My gut tells me he will deliver.

behold the horse.

a noble creature by its design, useful, a companion to man, a bearer of him in battle, a farmer's friend, wild on the plains, majestic, glorious.

all horses have inherent flaws. for instance they poop. their poop stinks. but no one cares because all horses do that.

however, some horses poop more than others. and some horses poop on you. sometimes you're just standing there and all the other horses didn't poop on you but that one horse just blew its poop straight out its horse butt and all over your new pacsun shirt and the joey bag of donuts you just got at moe's. and that just fugs up your day. but even that's forgivable because sometimes the best horses blow poo everywhere and fug up your day but every once in a while you've got that one horse out of millions that does that all. the. fuging. time. blows poo all over you every time you're in sight. blows poo over you and everyone else in the area, in fact, fuging up everyone's moe's and everyone's pacsun shirts and even all over all the other horses, up in the oats and water and poo, all over the sawdust and all over the kids taking pole jumping lessons in the indoor arena behind the main stable and making them cry and making their moms cancel lessons and bankrupting the owner's enterprise.

where this metaphor leads us is that superjthegreat should be made into glue

Sweet sweet lemonade

Glad they signed him to a 3 year deal, it gives the kind of job security where Richardson is basically saying "ok...its your team". A 1 or 2 year deal doesn't really do the same thing. That being said...if we regress and go, say, 8-8 next year and 5-11 the year after (I don't think it'll happen...but if we do), I wonder if Richardson will actually fire Rivera after 2 years or if he'll just miserably wait it out like he did with Fox in 2010.

We have an elite front....

Our secondary is a joke....regardless of what people think of our slightly improved S play.

Our front is elite as a whole, but I don't think any of our individual players are elite there, yet. Hardy and Johnson are near elite, but Star is young and great but none of our DTs are elite. Secondary is indeed a joke even with Munnerlyn improving and Mitchell and Mikell coming in, but still a joke. We definitely need to address it in the draft and also I'd like to get Tillman.

Well.

Yes.  I think Hurney should have been fired and Gettleman brought in.  Fox is a great coach.  A players coach.

But, that's not my gripe with the 3 year Rivera deal...why don't we let the guy earn it?  Extend 1 year and then give him the mega contract in 2015 once we go to the playoffs again?

Is your real name MRS Fox?

Richardson is doing what successful franchises do. Provide stability, build for the longterm and get a GM who knows what he is doing. Giving this contract to Rivera shows he is happy with the direction of the franchise and the growth they have made. He also knows he can't wait to keep starting over, he is hitching his success to Newton and Rivera and is going to give them the tools they need.  Then it will be all up to them to deliver.

Personally I am all in too.
