Dolphins GM Search: Tragedy or Comedy?

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So the Dolphins have finally hired a new GM, Former Buccaneers Director of Player Personnel Dennis Hickey.

Among the highlights of the search process that brought us here:

- Team owner Stephen Ross was initially said to have a list of eight candidates, but per reports, some of the better known names expressed disinterest.  Hickey, the eventual winner, was actually a late starter in the process, with more than one candidate prior to him receiving second interviews.

- Various candidate names were floated, including longtime Steelers exec Omar Khan, but those names seemed to be in and out of the process with no one quite clear where some of them stood. Khan, for example, was expected to get a second interview, but it apparently never happened.

- Early on, the League's advisory committee for minority front office candidates tried to steer minority candidates away from interviewing with the Dolphins, telling them they weren't going to get a legitimate shot at the job.  More than one minority candidate did take part in the process, though the final choice was not one of them.

- After former Dolphins receiver Davonne Bess was arrested for assaulting a police officer, a report came out that Bess had a prior bizarre incident while with the Dolphins; one which the Dolphins may have known about but failed to disclose to the Browns prior to trading them Bess.

- And although somewhat out of the limelight, the Dolphins own weird little drama, the conflict between Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, to this point remains unsettled.  It'll likely be one of the first decisions made by the new GM (great first day, huh?)

- Speaking of Cleveland, Browns Assistant GM Ray Farmer was at one point reported to be the front runner for the job, until he bowed out and went back to the Browns.  That would become a bit of a trend as things went on.

- The Miami Herald reported that GM candidates were told Head Coach Joe Philbin, who has been a head coach for only two years and has a 15-17 record, would have final say over the roster. There's also been discussion of other people's roles in the Dolphins power structure, about which questions remain,

- Patriots Director of Player Personnel Nick Caserio was interviewed twice in two days and, per one report, offered the job, but chose instead to return to his position with the Patriots.  One report since has suggested he wanted to fire Philbin, but the Dolphins balked.  A later report said this was false.

Side Note: If you want to add a little extra 'odd' to the story, search for images of Nick Caserio and check out his eyes

- Titans Vice President of Player Personnel Lake Dawson - a minority candidate - was offered the job after Caserio said no.  Dawson also decided he'd rather stay with his old job (and team).

- Dolphins Assistant GM Brian Gaine, the in-house candidate, and considered by many to be an up-and-coming front office personality, didn't get the job and word now is that he may leave the organization.

But now that the choice is made, all the weirdness should be over, right?

Eeeehhh, maybe.

Word now out that had Hickey not gotten the Dolphins job, new Bucs GM Jason Licht was probably going to fire him.  So Hickey goes from about to be fired by the Bucs to running the Dolphins.

Got all that?

So in the face of this long, complicated story, are the Dolphins right now more tragic or comedic?
