contract for Ron

Did the Browns go 12-4 this year? No. In fact, the Browns last went 12-4 in 1986.

So why would you compare us to that perennial loser.  In the last 12 years we have had 2 coaches. They have had 2 coaches in the last 12 months and 7 in the last 12 seasons.  Not even close.

My only comparison is signing Head Coaches and Coaching staffs to long contract s do have consequences.

When the Browns made the decision to fire coach Rob Chudzinski last week, and effectively let all of his staff go as well, owner Jimmy Haslam was making yet another very expensive decision. A year prior Haslam decided to part with team president Mike Holmgren, general manager Tom Heckert, coach Pat Shurmur and their staffs as well, a move that several sources have estimated at having cost him roughly $30-million in all.

Firing Chudzinski, and letting go of high-priced coordinators Norv Turner and likely Ray Horton, will likely cost another $20 million, sources said, and then Haslam is obviously going to have to now pay an entire new coaching staff that is coming on board. Almost all these contracts include “offsets,” which means the amount Haslam would owe his former employees is mitigated by what their new employers pay them, but even factoring in the fact that Chudzinski, Turner and others will find work as NFL assistants, the sources agreed that ultimately the moves Haslam will make between the end of the 2012 season -- when he let go of the Holmgren regime -- through the hiring of this new staff will amount to a $50 million commitment.

My point is there are consequences to a 4 or 5 year contract.

One I'm sure Jerry Richardson takes very, very seriously.

I'm quite sure when JR extended Fox 5 years after the 2005 season he was certain he would win some Playoff games during that 5 year contract.

Fox won zero.

So has Rivera, things change quickly in the NFL.

I don't know that anyone says give him a 4 or 5 year contract and guarantee all of it.  He was given an initial 4 year contract and he has earned an  extension.  I figure a 2 year extension gives him next year and 2 additional. That would give him consistency and the team stability.

And really 30 million in the course of things is not that big a deal.  Cam will get more than that in a signing bonus. The problems with Cleveland are not just failing to find a good coach.  They have had a number of ones who were successful elsewhere and failed in Cleveland.  I doubt most coaches could win in cleveland.

We should rest Cam for the first 2 games next year and see how he does before giving him a long term contract. This panther team have that fluky feel to it. I don't see 12-4. We're a low talent rag tag team. We only have a franchise QB on offense, otherwise nobody worth keeping. If we were to bring in a new coach for this team it is possible that other than QB there could be no returning starter on offense. That's insane! How many other team can you really say that about.

Really?? We just had seven players play in the probowl.....seven. Not to mention Smitty, Star, Short, Davis, Johnson, Klein, Mitchell(more than likely), and Olsen......................Gtfo

I hear ya, but JR likes his money.

Even with a 2 year extension going through the 2016 season if things go bad in 2014 or 2015 I'm not convinced JR would eat the remainder of the contract and move on. "Riding out" a year or two of a contract would suck big time if it becomes apparent Rivera isn't going to take the next step. JR 2010 thought he was so clever gutting the roster and keeping a disinterested Fox on the sideline. Unfortunately us fans suffered the consequences.

I simply would much prefer doing nothing this off season, maybe talk extension if things go well midseason next.

Or a one year bandaid so Rivera is not a "Lame Duck".

I just don't think with the potential long term consequences a 3 year extension is in the Panthers best interest as the organization is constructed today.

lol the first comment on there....

jesus people are so closed minded...

But I hope we give him 4 years. I think thats enough to know he can build and grow the team he wants.. and we can do some damage in those years. I really like Ron, as a person and coach. Hes a stand up guy, really nice, all the players respect him and you can see why.

No one out there Id really rather have right now.

Maybe get Andy Reids playcalling and Pete Carrolls scouting haha

I think JR learned a few things about lame duck coaches.  I doubt he would do the same thing again.  At last I can't imagine  he would screw thins up like he did in 2010.

I have been a supporter of Rivera and that keeping him this year would pay dividends. So I don't have the same concerns you do.  But I can understand people who are still jaded by the last few years.

Rivera likely will get extended.

But should he not he'll go into this year all Peaches and cream, sky's the limit.

Much different than Fox's last year.

We'll see if we get some kind of announcement soon.

Cracks me up though about JR and the Dome of Silence over BofA, no one was ever really sure if Hurney had a contract his last couple of years were they?

WTF, Foxy made 6 million his final contract year.

Exactly. Can't believe Gantt wrote that poo. I'm pretty sure he knows Foxy was one of the highest paid HC in the league. Then again, every article on there is like an open mic night where every writer tries to look clever facts be damned.

Capers and Seifert disagree. Even Fox would have been fired after that 2010 season. Why would anyone fire him after an 8-8 season the year before

I'm still impressed that Fox actually won 2 games in the NFL with Pickles and the rest of the practice squad

IMO, too many fans are still jaded by the past, and are just afraid that the future can truly be this bright. Sure we may never have had back to back winning seasons. But...there is a very, very, very, good chance that streak is coming to an end.

Do you not want the coach responsible for us winning not to have some security? I do. Then again, I believe we are a good team. We are not going to revert back to the "Same ol' Panthers". We are a young improving team. The future is bright. Let Rivera finish what he has started. And quit being afraid if the future.
