Cris Collinsworth 2013 Season Awards

I'd take both Mike Mitchell and Mark Barron over Vaccaro.

Luke was the leader of the 2nd best defense in the NFL and did everything - sacks, INT's, PD's, insane tackle numbers AND makes all the calls.

Watt is a man among boys but his contributions to his horribly ranked D don't even begin to compare with what Luke.

Sherman is another story, while he's arguably the best CB in the game he doesn't shoulder the load that Luke does. He relies on the pass rush and Earl Thomas.

I think their levels of play are all very similar, no one can match what Luke brings to the table overall, the centerpiece of an elite D is the right call.

When your thrown to less than anyone, but still lead the league in interceptions....your probably the defensive MVP

J.J. Watt won't win the D player of the year, due to the Texans' W/L record, but he's the consensus most dominant defensive player in the league. He forces more change for an offense than any CB can.

I'm surprised we don't have more people upset with the Sherman pick. These are the regular season stats:

Sherman: 49 tackles, 0 sacks, 8 interceptions, 16 PD, 1 Stuff, 1 TD

Kuechly: 156 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 interceptions, 7 PD, 16 Stuffs, 0 TD

Quinn: 57 tackles, 19 sacks, 0 interceptions, 1 PD, 12 Stuffs, 0 TD, 7 forced fumbles

Sherman is a great player, but he helps only in the passing game. Kuechly, on the other hand, was top 3 in tackles, in addition to having more interceptions than all 10 players in the NFL. I could much more easily stomach Quinn as the top choice, because he also helps both against the run and the pass.

Would Sherman really even be in the conversation if not for the play in the NFCS? And aren't these awards supposed to be decided based on regular season performance?
