Philly, you have a kid right? You're going to have a hell of a challenge trying to fit a car seat in the back of that Mini. With any German car, maintenance costs are going to be through the roof, but one can argue the driving experience is well worth it.

Since you're going to be driving to/from Charlotte on the highway, you're going to want a car that's a good highway cruiser. Typically, smaller cars like the Mini or a Civic are less comfy on long distance trips and have stiffer rides, both of which can result in a sore back. Then again, you've been driving an '87 Volvo wagon, so you're probably used to anything.

If you want a stylish, reliable, and economical car with a manual tranny that's under 10k and is big enough for the kid and small enough to have fun with, I'd recommend checking out the '04-'08 Acura TL or '03-'07 Honda Accord Coupe. Both are the best bang for the buck IMO.

I've been driving my Accord since my junior year of high school (~70k miles) with routine trips back and forth from Knoxville to Memphis and the most major maintenance I've had to do was change out the brake pads.

Just my $.02. Good luck with your search.

you're right but god damn that just sounds so boring

my wife has a camry and we've been using it to truck around the kid when necessary since the volvo's backseat is fuged up, so even if we couldn't use it on the regular it wouldn't be a deviation from the norm

My GF was thinking about trading in Her 350z and going to a mini cooper (I have no idea why) and then I came across this a couple of days ago:

Mini Cooper is #3 on the worst used cars to own list.

Piggy-backing here, but there's a link to the top 10 best used vehicles in that article:

Notice that 5 of them are Toyotas? I'm kind of shocked no one mentioned them yet, but it may have to do with the price limit you were setting. Once my Ion dies out, that's what I'm most likely going to buy, as the Camry's look nice and aren't as expensive as a similar Honda version.

Toyota Yaris? I had to rent one on a trip to Baton Rouge once. Not sure if they offer a manual transmission, though.

You are a rare breed, by the way. Most people don't have the discipline you do to limit yourself to sub-10k car.

My wife had a yaris. Great little car. But she decided to play chicken with a humvee so now we have a Ford fusion (safer)   the fusion has been great as  well
