Coaching help...

Cape Fear Cat

Recommended Posts

I realize this isn't Panther specific, but I have a 12 year old nephew who wants to play Jr. High FB this season. He's 5'11, 230lbs. I want to try and coach him up on some good lineman skills. Does anyone have a good suggestion for where I can find tips and drills? It's been a long time since I played, and I'm afraid what I remember may not be up to the task of getting the kid off on the right foot. Thanks in advance for any help!:)

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Yes, he is a horse! They wouldn't let him play Pop Warner because he was so much bigger than everyone else. It really bummed him out. I just put an arm around his shoulder and told him not to worry, that there'd come a day when coaches would be drooling to get him on their teams. As for weights, I'm a little leery of him starting that just yet. I'd like to see him get another year or so of growth to allow his joints and the rest of his body to develop on its own first. I'm sticking to PT - pushups, drills, etc. for right now.

I 2nd the "play football the NFL way" book suggestion - it covers the basic techniques and if he can master those he'll be well on his way.

I agree that 12 is too early for any serious weightlifting - I'd work on his athleticism and coordination at this point. He's a big kid (take it from someone who is 6'6" 330) so I'm guessing he could use some work on his foot speed. I'm pals with Mike Baab (played many seasons for the Browns and Chiefs) and he recommended jumping rope to me to develop coordination, agility and conditioning.

Another big thing at that age is coaching effort. It's real easy at that stage of life to just give up when something seems too hard, or to half-way it when you should be giving it all your effort. Teach him to always give all he's got. That could take him farther than technique, honestly.

That's so true. I tried to get him into that mindset yesterday when we went out to start throwing and catching a little bit. I told him that technique could be taught, but that no one can teach you "heart." I wanted to stress to him that effort and determination can count for a lot when it comes to making a team.

My eighth grade year, I was halfa--ing it through pretty much the first five games of the season. Then something happened just before halftime in game six that ticked me off to the extreme, so I came out for the second half and played like a man possessed.

Prior to that, I hadn't even realized I wasn't giving it my best. After that happened, I started thinking "Geez, why don't I play like that all the time?"

Sometimes you don't even know what you're capable of...
