Nobody is talking DE in the first?

Assuming that we lose Greg Hardy-- nobody seems concerned about that void.  We just had a 12-win demonstration on how important it is to pressure the passer and stop the run and we lose one of the best players on the front 7.

DEs are expensive, so I doubt we find quality in free agency.  The draft has some talent at DE early, but it drops off quickly.  If we are going to have 1 DE on an expensive second contract, then we need to rotate them so we always have a first and a second contract at the position--Hardy shows us that we cannot afford 2 second contracts.  Since Johnson has a few years left on his deal, I cannot think of a better time to grab a stud.

Hardy would have drawn about $12.5 or so if we tagged him.  A rookie at the 28th spot will earn about $7 million over 4 years.  Putting that in perspective, Hardy will want about $50 million for 4 years (rough guess).  Now think Cam and Kuechly.  Think 2014 and the Cap hell we are in personified by Stewart and Godfrey.   So if we draft a DE he plays for under $2 million total per season, Hardy commands more than 10 times that.

Hypothetically speaking, lets say we decide to draft a solid DE at #28.  We have $11 million more to spend in free agency.  Say we re-sign Gross at $4m, Ginn at $2m, Munnerlyn at $2m, and Mitchell at $2.5m.  So now think of it this way:

Gross

and

Mitchell

and

Munnerlyn

and

Ginn

and

Stanford DE Trent Murphy...............or..................Greg Hardy

That would leave about $9 million under the cap.  A free agent WR and a CB.

My draft would change to something like this (I am using http://fanspeak.com/ontheclock/):

28
DE TRENT MURPHY (known pass rusher from 2 and 3 pt. stances--very versatile with high motor)
STANFORD
60
OT MORGAN MOSES (Long arns and nice feet.  Gross's replacement in 2015 and RT in 2014)
VIRGINIA
92
WR DONTE MONCRIEF   (we signed a free agent too)
MISSISSIPPI
124
CB KEITH MCGILL  (Re-signed Munnerlyn, signed a free agent, and still have White)
UTAH
156
S JONATHAN DOWLING (Need competition at SS and/or depth at FS)
WESTERN KENTUCKY
188
G MICHAEL SCHOFIELD (He won't be this low, but a solid, versatile lineman here)
MICHIGAN

The guy I want if we have to go DE early is Dominique Easley. Really similar to Hardy. Versatile guy you can line up on the interior or outside. High motor, great burst off the snap. Bit of an injury concern, but I'm not terribly worried. I do like Murphy too because of his length in addition to the things you already mentioned.

Yea, bc we're not going DE in the 1st.

If Hardy's gone and there's not a legit WR or OT there it really wouldn't shock me. I prefer to trade Hardy for a second (if we don't keep him) and use one of those 2's on a DE but nothing is out of the realm of possibility.

There's not a single DE in this class worth taking at 28 who is not named Clowney.

Tuitt is intriguing but he looks like he could really be a NFL DT.

Murphy led the nation in sack, but the kid is pretty slow. And, struggled this week in practice.

If we wanted a DE that bad, "Marcus" Smith is name in the 2nd round.

Yes because one of the franchise caliber LT's in this draft are going to drop like a rock to 28. You really aren't good at this poo chuck...

Ill take a Tiny Richarson, Morgan Moses, or even a Guard of Gabe Jackson caliber at 28 before any DE after Clowney.

I'm pretty good at this stuff. You know it too. But haters gon hate.

I'm not the poo cutting both Dwill and Stew and acting like it's realistic.

If Hardy leaves I could see us getting Jackson Jeffcoat in the second maybe third if we're lucky.

I'm all for a DE if Hardy is not retained, but not in the first round.

We have like three guys that are ready to contribute on the roster right now: Alexander, Horton, and Addison.

Also, we'd be rather smart to go after a FA like Willie Young.

This draft is deep everywhere you look at. We'll still be able to find a talented DE in the 3rd round to develop: Marcus Smith, Kareem Smith, Ed Stinson, Aaron Lynch, etc.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
