A sticky SALESman thread

I am in car sales.  New career for me.  Have been in it 1 year.  Worked for the same company all year but changed brands.  Now sell VW and Volvo. (Since Nov)  After Feb sales was ready to look fo something else.  March has gotten off to a great start.  Starting this month the company just intituted a fast start bonus for x number of cars by the 15th of the month.  I got it!!! Only sales person in my dealership to make it.  Just sold a $90,000 used car.  (very slightly used M-B SL550..traded in on a new Porsche which we also sell but I am not certified to sell).  Hoping 2nd half of the month will be as good or better as the 1st.  So now I love my job.  But it is long hours.

So...you experienced sales guys. Anything else I can get into that has better hours and benefits than car sales that would pay well the first year?  Better weather is going to result in good results for what I am doing. I am enjoying sales but would like a better benefit package.

Cars is a a different type of sales. The prospects actually come to you!

I did car sales for a year before I got into copiers. There I learned a lot about sales and prospecting. From there I moved into software and was making six figures in my mid twenties. When the market tanked do did my job prospects. I'm now transitioning(over the last year) from a sales role to a product line manager

How are you at picking up the phone and calling people?

We actually do a lot of phone work.  Have to convince someone to come to our dealership rather than going somewhere else.  Have sold several cars by phone...got commitments on used cars sight unseen. (last one was the $90k M- B.  Have had success building trust and rapport in person and by phone.

So what do you have in mind for me?

Please feel free to PM me with a good job lead.

When I bought my car, at least 3 people in the dealership asked me if I needed a job and wanted to come work there. Is it possible they have higher turnover than we do?

I don't think I could do it- as nice as it would be to have people walking into my dealership, I couldn't deal with the wishy washyness. Also, talk about customers who are convinced they know more about your product than you do. With the way online car sales have become so prevalent, it seems very challenging.

The only positive thing I heard out of it was that I could legitimately say to a man "what, you can't afford that?" with a smile on my face and still manage to get a sale out of that.

sigh, so many people I would love to say that to now.

Props to you for getting into it LP.

Just got back from a week vacation so I am back to being a happy salesperson.....for the moment.

Is it a fun job to be a salesman? And do you make good money? What do you major in?

I don't really know much about the field at all

Is it fun?  Do you like being repeatedly kicked in the nuts?  If so than this job is for you!

So....March marks 1 year in car sales (or sales period) for me.  Have stayed with the same company but my third location (came to number 3 in Nov).  Various reasons for changes...mostly was management support and opportunity.  So, as of today...I am 1 car away from my best month ever. If I can sell 4 more cars by the end of the month, I get a very good bonus.  And...I am in the lead for sales person of the month. (Which gets another bonus)

I like where I am because we have good products and believe it or not...the managers are honest and expect the same from the sales staff.

Bad news is...weather is turning crappy.  On the positive...last week of the month is usually the best.  Hope latter can counter the first.

Please wish me luck....I need it.  Send good vibes my way.

Yes it's fun. But I love finding new prospects and selling them on my company and product. You can make as much money as you are willing to work for. I like the autonomy of sales and I hate being in an office or behind a desk so outside sales is fuging awesome IMO. I majored in marketing (LOL). Majoring in marketing is like majoring in cheese.

This is why I never even finished my degree.  I was already working full time and the door opened up for a sales position at my company.  17 years later and I'm still going strong.  Most sales jobs don't even require a degree unless it's a very technical position.  My current job said 4 year degree required but once they interviewed me and realized I knew the business very well they could care less about the degree.  I even pointed it out to them at the beginning saying I didn't want to waste their time if that was a deal breaker.
