Honest assessment

OK usually I bs during most of the season so I thought I would give you a honest assessment of this upcoming season.

Now go ahead and rip it apart.

Nice post. My few disagreements

1. RB- We both agree that we have the best duo in the league. But I think Goodson will prove to be worth every penny, because his talent is much more equivalent to J Stew and DWill's than Goings ever was, and has play maker written all over him.

2. OL- OL Depth is a huge concern of mine. I'm fine with our back-up tackles, more than satisfied with our back up guards, but its center that concerns me the most. Kalil is a pro bowl center, and we don't have a Hangman to back him up. Though I really like Duke Robinson, Codagan, Bernadau, and Schwartz.

3. TE- You might be overlooking Barnidge

4. QB- IMO if you want another ARZ game, Jake not only has to poo the bed but we also need a panic mode coach and a retarded DC with absolutely no legitimate game plan specifically designed to stop the cards. And lastly, we need soft zone, and an all-pro WR to run free in our defense.

I think your going to see an improvement with Jake. He's got motivation and a QB coach who is going to finally help his mechanics and pocket awareness, another year off tommy john should help too. And as for Matt Moore, I don't think the Jake signing proved anything against him. I thought the extension was an act of faith and cap adjustment on the FO's part. No one expects Jake to be here another 5 years.

And personally I believe the McCown signing last year was a reactive signing due to Matt Moore's leg fracture in preseason, they didn't want another 07, although I know the FO has had interest in Luke before.

5- I'm with you 100% at WR

Defensively, I'm pretty much agree but I think Everette Brown will have every down DE capability by the end of the season, and I think Godfrey is going to be huge. CB will be ok I think Martin should at least be adequate at nickel.

Rosario's a great receiving TE? Not sure about that-he's had one good game....

I think Rosario has shown some flashes. But we don't throw to the tightend enough to know if he is good. The reason he had one good game is that Steve Smith was out in that game. IMO, even the best tightend's in the NFL would look average in our system. And since our strength is running the ball, he probably never will get many catches.

In our last 5 regular season games, only once did we throw the ball more than 20 times. If Jake completes 60%, that means 12 or fewer catches total. Not a lot to go around, especially when your receivers are Moose and SS.

FWIW, a good game is one in which he catches every pass thats thrown at him and gets open even when he doesn't get thrown to. By that standard, he had a few good ones.

We have a good shot of ending up around .500 the schedule this year isn't anywhere near as easy as last year. I mean three wins last year were just flat out gimmes. KC, OAK, and DET. Playing the AFC East and NFC East, two of the most competitive and talented divisions in football mean the Panthers have a TOUGH year ahead of them. the only positive from that is that the rest of the NFC South has to play those teams too!

I had my hopes up last year from the second Jake hit Rosario in the end zone against San Diego. I was like, if the Panthers pull this one out, it's going to be a big year. It was, but Fox has never put together two good seasons and I hate to say it, but I expect the injury bug to bite ('08 was a very healthy year, relatively speaking) and the tough schedule will wear on the Panthers. 10-6 at the best if Jake, Smith, Deangelo and Stewart all stay healthy. But you want my honest prediction? Here's how I see the NFC South shaping up:

Atlanta 10-6 - The combo of Matt Ryan, Michael Turner and Roddy White is one of the top combos in football. Hate to say it, but the Panthers will be chasing Ryan for the forseeable future.

New Orleans 8-8 - The offense is stellar, again, but the defense just doesn't show up when it has to.

Carolina 7-9 - The injury bug bites hard...unless we stay healthy the Panthers aren't going to make much noise this year.

Tampa 4-12 - Just can't see this team doing anything...too many fresh faces all around.

Don't take this the wrong way, I love the Panthers and will root for them in good times and bad. But my prediction is realistic and not homeristic.

Atlanta winning the division?? not with that defense.

Not quite sure why nobody thinks we are the favourite to win the division AGAIN... you can't really use our schedule as a reason either because Atlanta's and NO's are equally "difficult" ... I think its safe to leave TB out of the division crown discussion this year.

We win the division this year at 10-6 maybe 11-5 because (and maybe i'm in the minority here) I don't see anyone else in our division winning 10 games.

Yep, kinda funny isn't it. "They" say we cannot win the division because we have never had two winning seasons in a row but "They" neglect to say that Atlanta has never had two winning seasons in a row either. So "their" Logic is full of crap. And all that last to first in the NFC South is History because we broke the cycle last year by winning the NFC South when we were NOT the cellar dweller in 07. I'm looking for the Panther's to break another such cycle by winning the NFC again this year. Hopefully with a winning season LOL

I really don't see how Ryan, Turner or White are a better combo than Jake, Williams/Stewart. and Smith. Sure Ryan has a ton of potential but so far he hasn't even won a playoff game, Turner is much more likely to have an injury given his overuse while we at least have a back-up, and White has had one pro-bowl year.

NO has a great offense but points wise they averaged 3 more points a game than we did. Somehow I believe our defense is worth 3 points compared to theirs. Last year we were pretty awful and we were still 4 points better. Plus Brees actually gets worse in the fourth quarter not better like Jake.

As for Tampa, who even knows what they have at this point.

Truth is that Atlanta was lucky to be healthy as well and New Orleans was hit by the injury bug. No need to think we are more injury prone than anyone else.

You analysis appears more "chicken little" than realistic to me.
