New York boy dies saving lives of 6 relatives

An 8-year-old boy who died while trying to rescue his disabled grandfather from the man's burning mobile home had saved the lives of six relatives after being awoken by a burning blanket, authorities said.

Tyler Doohan was being called a hero by firefighters Wednesday, two days after the early morning fire tore through the home in a trailer park in Penfield, killing the boy, his grandfather and his uncle. Six other relatives — four adults and children ages 4 and 6 — were rescued because of Tyler's actions, officials said.

"He saved six people. They all would have died if he hadn't woken up," said Chris Ebmeyer, chief of the volunteer fire company in Penfield, a suburban town of 36,000 just east of Rochester.

The fire chief said nine people were staying at the 14-foot-by-60-foot trailer when the fire started around 4:45 a.m. Monday. Tyler, spending the night at his grandfather's place because school was off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, was awoken when the blanket covering his sleeping 4-year-old cousin caught fire, Ebmeyer said.

Tyler woke up six of his relatives, and they all made it outside. The boy then ran back to the room where his 57-year-old grandfather, Lewis Beach, was sleeping. Beach used a wheelchair and crutches after having a leg amputated because of health problems, the fire chief said.

Sad that he passed away, but kudos to a boy this young thinking of others before himself.

I saw this on the news this morning. His mother said he died "next to his best friend" and was happy he didn't die alone.

Read the same thing today. Definitely made me tear up. I have a son who just turned 9. I could not even fathom how hard it would be to lose him.

Kid was a special person...sad tragedy indeed

Yeah, this story actually kind of makes me mad. Why didn't those sorry ass adults go back in?  And even if they didn't, why the fug would they LET him go back in there?  Sorry ass adults...  RIP to the kid, and he is a true hero, but he shouldn't have been the one going back in that home.

I doubt that's how it went down.

I am picturing everyone outside, and the boy running back in and the parents yelling "no wait! Stop!"

I, for one, would have died trying to drag my son out.

It's a shame too, think of how heroic he may have grown up to be.

On a different note, how the hell were six people in a single wide and not notice a fire???

That is also how I bet it happened. I doubt this was a group of adults sending their 8 up son back in the house.

If you have ever been at a house fire where people are still inside and the chaos that happens you would prob agree....happened to my neighbor when I was in middle school. One if my best friend's sister died in the fire. We were outside with them when we heard all the cammotion. It was insanity with people running around screaming.
