Yahoo contributor Jonathan Wagner on Nicks.

who is saying anything about him being "the savior" to our WR corps?

pretty much everyone is saying he'd be an upgrade over lafell. not much more than that.

i think he is one option among several WR FAs that could be the easiest to aqcuire and on par with the top options. i think that we should also draft a guy early...and then that guy would likely be the "savior" of the WR corps. i think most would agree with that.

nicks would just be making a fair WR corps better.

The huddle consensus seems to be that Hakeem Nicks will largely solve our woes at the position.

All along I've been against paying him big, if we can get him for a reasonable price, I'm for it. But we have no indication that he is only looking for a one year deal, or to take a cheap contract. We'll have to wait and see. It also heavily depends on just how sought after he will be once FA begins.

Let's not make this some conspiracy that absolves Nicks of any blame.

I might buy what you are saying here if he had not been fined by his own team for conduct. Not to mention he couldn't find the end zone, but he wanted to tell the media he is still a top receiver in the NFL. That's a concerning mindset in the midst of a losing season. How will he respond to adversity here?

The guy has talent, that isn't what is up for debate currently, it's what's going on upstairs. Gettleman is going to take a hard look at the whole thing.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Nicks saying he thinks he is still a top receiver.  That is a lose-lose situation.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nicks took a discount to come here. He's from NC, favorite player is Smith and of course the connection with Dave. He would fit the offense perfectly. great blocker, can catch, run routes etc. He's the reason Cruz was able to put up staggering numbers. He just needs to be disciplined which I believe Ron and the staff can do. He's an underrated FA imo just because of the lack of production from last year when he didn't want to be in NY.

He scored zero touchdowns, the team had not won more than 2 games in a row all year, and he was supposedly missing team meetings. It's not a smart move. The smart move would have been to say "I'm concerned with where our team is at right now, not myself".

ftfy.

no one is talking paying him big. no one is talking about an unreasonable contract.

he'd be an upgrade over lafell. let's give him the money that lafell would have gotten.

he's not the top guy in the market so i doubt there will be a ton of demand or competition for him.

he may try to wait it out, but he's got to know that after last year's performance that he's not going to be getting near what he would have a year or two ago.

he won't be vet min, but he'll be reasonable for what he's capable of.

We'll have to disagree on that then. He's been touted as the solution all throughout the 2013 season. With people even wanting to trade for him at one point.

As for the rest of your points, we aren't far off from each other.

i just think you're overstating the majority's stance on him.

touted as 'a' solution thoughout the 2013 season? absolutely.

as 'the' solution? not really.

that may have been how you viewed it, esp. since you haven't been in favor of the guy all along, but i don't see that as being the way it is...esp now since that's pretty much all that matters.

he didn't shine this past year at all, but aside from the TDs his performance on a bad team was respectable.

he was probably disgruntled there working with coughlin (who was voted on in a players poll this year as the one players would least like to have as their coach), but he very well could be a guy that benefits from new scenery...and in his case, a return home to play with his home team and his favorite player.

and then he might just suck now...but i doubt that. gettleman knows the deal with him. i'll trust his call one way or the other on him. he's just not someone that i'm going to write off. he is someone that i think can help us get better on offense and be a better weapon for cam to throw to than lafell.

This is what one diehard Giants fan had to say about the Nicks situation in New York.

("Nicks had a tough year but there was more going on here than first meets the eye. First, Wrong-Way Reuben becomes Eli's primary target when Cruz is covered (hence a strong contribution to Eli's INT's). There is no logic behind that. Second, to give Nicks zero looks in the Carolina game, his home state, was poor judgement on Eli's part. Nicks was not the same player after that game. Third, all those on the Jernigan bandwagon forget that the only reason he is on the field is the injury to Cruz. Plain and simple, JJ could not beat out Cruz for the slot position.")

Nicks is a special player. The GB playoff win evidenced that. He came down with Eli's chuck before the half to essentially win that game. I'll take a motivated Nicks over JJ or Wrong-Way Reuben any day of the week. Finally, remember how Cruz got hurt. A 16-yard pass two feet over his head without any pressure on the passer. If anyone quit this year, it was the Giant's $20MM cap man, Eli.")
