Your reaction if we go DBs in the first couple rounds?

If we double up anything in the first 2 rounds I'd be rather upset with all the seemingly glaring needs......we need to go WR then OL or vice versa, corner in the 3rd but any of these are interchangeable depending on what we do in FA ....every truely great defense has had at least one shut down corner, I feel that is a missing link that would put us over the edge

probably disappointed, but that's all contingent on what we do in free agency. gettleman will have a lot more cap space to work with than he did this time last year; it's not out of the realm of possibility to have three or four new offensive faces on the team before the draft hits. if those guys are o-line vets and hakeem nicks then suddenly the draft becomes a much nicer proposition since you can take BPA over reaching for needs.

if that's the case i'd be happy to improve the team's most glaring positional weakness.

When have we spent a 1st rd pick on a WR? We have seen several young wideouts come in year 1 and contribute, we just need to scout well

Rae Carruth in the 1st and Dwayne Jarrett in the top half of the second.  How did they work out??

Seriously though, we do need WRs, I just think that we need an impact guy right away and for every wide receiver that plays wells there are 2 others who struggle their first year or two.

The other thing that matters is who are we talking about at 28th?  Lets say it comes down to the 2nd best corner or the 7th best WR or the 9th best OT.  I would prefer the corner in that case.  Particularly if the guys at WR or OT can be found with similar talent in later rounds.  When you pick 28th, the top guys at WR and OT will be long gone. We won't be having someone like Star fall into our laps this year.

Nobody is going to agree on how to do this.  However, WRs do take time to develop.  So do DEs.  So do DBs.  The best "plug and play" positions are RB and maybe LB

Where do we have the most depth?  DE, even if Hardy walks.  (Remember, Johnson and Hardy developed into legit DEs in year three; before that, both spent time in the dog house.  Alexander is entering year 3).

So it makes sense to take the cap room by letting Hardy go and use the $$ on three or four other positions.

Then draft a DE early.

To me, that solves the problem.  No, we can't keep Hardy and address these other positions.

I am concerned, however, that the free agent market at WR sucks and the DE market in the draft is also weak.  We need a stud--a #1 WR because Smitty can't be that any longer (never should have been to begin with, Hurney).   Therefore, I think Proehl will play a big role in this process.  We have role playing WRs--Ginn, Smitty, McNutt, King--we need a stud.  This is the draft to get one.

How many wrs have we ever drafted that were good right off the bat. I think we will pick up a few guys in FA and supplement with the draft. Some.positions like RB or LB you can start right away. Others you cant.If we want a guy to groom then draft one. If we want someone to start we need a vet. So my reaction would be thats great for 2 years from now but little help right away.

How many wide receivers has DG drafted?  We have a new regime now, ya know.

If you could make a reasonable argument that the DB's were BPA at a position of need when we drafted them then I wouldn't have a problem with it, but if we started reaching for DB's to fill a need while leaving a OL or WR on the board who was clearly BPA I would have a problem with it.

That's just speculation. We have no idea who would be available. What if only  3 Wr's are off the board?  People drop every year. I'm not saying to take a WR round 1 no matter what,  I'm not a fan of reaching.  There's no way to say that there is no WR in the draft that we could take  in the 1st or 2nd rd that could make an impact in 2014. I'm just saying this team has ignored the WR position for a long time so we can't be afraid to invest a high pick in it if the right player is there.

As far as Jarrett goes I really trust that Gettleman can judge talent BETTER than Hurney  so I trust him not to take a slow, lazy, stupid WR with a high pick. And it is really funny to say we should not pick a WR high because of Rae Carruth. The odds are pretty high that we don't draft another murderer.

Look at the mocks drafts.  Most of the early ones I have seen have at least 5 WRs coming off the board before 28th and at least 6 or 7 OTs.  Versus perhaps 2 corners.  I know that can change and right now everything is speculation.  I am just pointing out that when you draft for need instead of BPA, you end up reaching for guys and that can cause big problems.

Mentioning Carruth and Jarrett were a joke which is why I said the word seriously.  I hate when I have to spell out everything.

Exactly.  The same thing applies the other way around.  No need to pick the 8th best OT when we could have the second best corner or the 4th best WR.  Has to be BPA.  What we often think is a position of need changes by the time the season starts.

IMO it wouldn't matter.

We could draft and add rookie Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzales, and Anthony Munoz on this team...

And Mike Shula will still be Mike Shula.

THAT was the first and primary step to returning our offense to being explosive again. Finding an OC that has the fortitude and desire to BE explosive. Unfortunately, we did not.

We will add new weapons. Those weapons are INDEED critically needed.

But its going to be like giving cough syrup to a lung cancer patient unfortunately.

Mike Shula will still be Mike Shula.

It'll sure be exciting to see all those shiny new toys as we plod slowly down the field though. Shula will be in his comfort zone and Rivera will be happy because it will be "calm".

We did take shots down the field this season, we just didn't hit on those. Hitting even a couple big plays a game would maybe help Shula be more aggressive. He had games and moments he did ok.  It's hard to know how much he was playing to his personnel

I would love for us to be in a position where all of our needs are reasonably met through free agency that we don't have any incentive to obscure drafting the best talent available, unlike in the Hurney days where we just decided to go BPA without having done poo in FA so that positions don't improve
