The Kraken coming up on Fox Sports 1

I honestly think we should just franchise Krack.  It would allow us to field offers from other teams and in the mean time keep Greg motivated to play well because it's essentially another contract year.  I would be more scared signing him long term and then seeing a production drop off.  Greg has earned a raise from us.  We're the team he has helped very cheaply over the past few seasons.  If we don't keep him, in two years after the rb contracts are off the books we're probably going to be looking at another situation where we're going to have to pay big money to keep the next DE(who may not be as good).  Lets just keep our DLine together.  Our defense makes us contenders.  They're the only reason we went 12-4. If we want to finally get those back to back winning seasons.....defense is still the priority.

Problem is ... if we tag and keep him, then the cap hit is still huge ... and probably bigger than if we signed him.  Tag him and he gets a 1 year salary as one of the top DEs in the league.  All that salary hits the cap in 2014.  If we sign him to a long term contract, most likely he gets a juicy signing bonus and the prorated bonus plus salary will be less than a franchise tag for 2014.

Considering the money we have tied-up in players that won't provide cap relief if we cut them, the Panthers are in a tough spot.  We have other needs to address and it may not be feasible to keep Hardy.  It will be a couple years before we get cap relief from the current contracts.

Thing is someone will be willing to trade for Hardy.  If we don't franchise him, we won't get anything in return.  We need to get something in return for a guy like Greg.

Sucks that one of Hurney's best draft picks cant be re-signed because of his own salary cap meddling. Is there really any Panther that was better than Hardy in the 6th? . . . . 15 sacks, maan.

I can't think of any long term starters drafted in the 6th or later other than Captain.  Although, Brad Hoover was an undrafted rookie in Carolina and went on to start every game for 9 seasons.

Agree.  They made that mistake with Pepp.  My point was that tagging and keeping him doesn't help with our 2014 cap situation.  If that is DG's plan, I hope he sets the bar pretty high.  Hardy is the best DE on the market.  My hope would be for a #1 at a skill position with a couple / few years left on a contract that doesn't handcuff the Panthers.  The prorated signing bonus doesn't go with the player so we would only be on the hook for salary.  If he doesn't go that route, high draft picks would be the only other alternative.

I would love to be a fly on the wall during those discussions.

Played well against the Falcons.

No showed vs the 49ers.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch Greg.

People were watching.

No show against the 49'ers? No sacks maybe, but he was definitely there working against an All Pro LT and double teams, it's a shame no one else could do anything one on one since he got the bulk of the attention.

I agree there's a good chance he'll be gone; but, remember, lots of people, including myself and you (you posted in the draft thread the day before telling everyone that there was no way it would happen) , did not believe Star would drop to us.

Who knows what will happen. Hope he stays at a reasonable price. Far-fetched? Maybe, but no more so than Star falling all the way down to us in the draft.

I'll be bumping this in a few weeks.
