David Newton ranking our 21 FAs by importance (updated 21 thru 5)

Every single dimension that's ever existed, it's just inconceivable that Lafell gets an offer from the Panthers. He's not a #2 or #3 WR on any team in the NFL and isn't worth any sort of contract outside of the base minimum.

Right. You might want to review the post I just made regarding guys in the $2.5 to $1 million range last season, which is about where LaFell should be asking. You can't find 600 yard guys in that group with frequency. League minimum for a guy who has three 600 yard seasons and is still young and can block his face off? Please.

I doubt there is a team in football where Brandon LaFell couldn't compete strong for the 3rd option. Throwing him away for nothing would be stupid.

I still wouldn't resign him, he had his chance when Smitty went down and he didn't perform. So no he goes, after seeing him in the last three games plus the playoff game. I'd rather have a rookie WR then Lafell and that's what I mean by him not coming back. This team needs to draft youth at WR instead of playing the middle tier FA market or signing guys that have no business being a #2 WR. So my post still stands as stated, there is no dimension now nor one that's ever existed in which I would resign LaFell.

If every guy that would fail as a number one WR wasn't worth keeping, it would be a small league. LaFell isn't a number one by any stretch of the definition but that does not render him useless. Captain Munnerlyn isn't a starting caliber CB on most teams in the league either, but he's important in OUR defense.... which is why he's probably going to get paid more than he should to stay and why he's probably super high on this schlub's list. LaFell is a strong 3rd option who can fill in as a 2nd option in a pinch, but doesn't belong there full time. I don't know if you're familiar with the type of talent that is traditionally available at the end of the first round, if we even use our first round pick on a WR, but finding a guy there that would catch for 600 yards his first year in the league would be damn near miraculous. Only 4 WR drafted last year had more than 600 yards. Tavon Austin, Cordarrelle Patterson, and DeAndre Hopkins were the three taken in the first round and of those only Hopkins exceeded 600 yards. Patterson and Austin were both below 500 yards.

I'm not saying that we need to hold onto LaFell forever. He'd be ideal for a 3rd option, but the "grass is greener" folks need to get their head around his value to this team instead of holding out hope that somebody is going to swoop in and save us. It's unrealistic. This board seems notoriously bad at evaluating WR talent. How many people here have had a hard on for the Louis Murphy, Armanti Edwards, David Gettis, Joe Adams, Keloah Pillares, etc. type guys that have done literally nothing over LaFell? We finally get a dude that can at least produce at a modest pace and since he's not a number one people lose their minds saying we should discard him like a piece of trash. Makes no sense.

There is value to every player on the team this year, as there should be for every team that goes 12-5. I would love to keep Lafell at the right price, because you do make valid points. The problem is do you pay this guy 2M at the age of 27-28? Probably, but not on a team that has the needs we have, the cap situation, and the deep receiving draft. Ginn doing as well as he did show that it is possible to bring someone in that would be better. Take that 2M, draft 2 receivers and get a FA and I like our chances at finding someone who will produce more just as Ginn did.

I can see us keeping Dockery, at least until the 53 man cut. He's cheap, big, and needed. It's going to help that Captain might ask for too much.

I like what I have seen out of the limited snaps that we've seen from Dockery.  The problem is that he's much like the rest of our defensive backfield: He has some decent measurables and OK athletic ability, but is not quite starting material. There's just a little something missing.  I may be jumping the gun, but most of our guys' ceilings seem to be as back-ups.

Sounds like I am talking myself into placing a premium on a shutdown corner in the draft. ***cough cough*** What the hell am I doing?

Bruce Campbell being a must sign ahead of LaFell, it's obvious that he can play. Facepalm.

Good point. So...we posted a player who was on injury all year a better re-sign than someone who actually produced numbers and started in all the games?! All be it Lafell didn't meet expectations but he still contributed and was a part of the 12-5 season. I'm losing faith in this report, quickly.
