Seahawks vs 49ers NFC Championship Gameday Thread

The one gripe I had with Cam for a large portion of this season was the reluctance to take off and run after progressing through his initial reads. We are seeing in this game how a scrambling quarterback can take over a game. Screw holding the rock and waiting for someone to get a yard of separation. That's like watching paint dry with our receiving core. We took some unnecessary sacks last week because of his reluctance to just take off and get us into field goal range or move the chains. He did have some key scrambles, but I felt like we missed a couple of big opportunities in that game.

It's true. His sack in the 3rd, the first one he had WIDE OPEN running lanes. He didnt have to dodge anyone, just run forward. And he had plenty of time but just held onto the ball, which is why I dont see this big fuss about our oline. He would have got a first down if he ran. His 1st season he'll take off, but over time he's settled into being a pocket passer and teams are playing him that way. The issue is if you're going to stand in the pocket, where's your weapons to throw to?

What Kaep is doing is the "one read and shuffle"

he aint even getting to the second read, but hell its working

what do i know lololololol

I could care less if Cam was making 0 reads and taking off while moving the chains and winning us the ball game.

There was one instance last week where we drove the field, took 2 sacks in a row, and ended up out of field goal range with 0 points. On one of the replays he had a massive hole to run through. He likely wouldn't have picked up the first, but even 5-10 yards would have given us a chance at 3 points and kept the game within reach. Coming away with 0 points there deflated us as a team and took away all momentum we may have had left.

Sure it takes a toll, but in the playoffs it is win or go home. Cam has proven he can take a hit. He can still get down and avoid a hit after a long run and has shown he is pretty good at avoiding the big punishing hits that QBs like RGIII and Kaepernick expose themselves to.

I've seen Cam take a lot punishment in games, he does what he has to, but there's only so much load a quarterback can take in the run game. Neither of us have done what these guys are at that level, so it's pretty much impossible to relate. Kaepernick has a hell of an OL, and Gore, that helps...

Are u kidding me? Did u watching the Bronco's game? Peyton had all year to throw his balls. And u wonder why this team will never get to that competitive level.

I think there is a really big emphasis on Cam staying in the pocket

Next year, we should see more of balance

To prove your point:

@billvoth: In his last 7 games, Cam Newton was sacked 20 times on 199 attempts.

Peyton’s been sacked 3 times in his last 7 on 292 attempts.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
