Can't bash Shula when your primary receiver is 5'9 35 years old. That's NFL retirement age for most players. Especially a physically intensive position as WR.

no one wants to hear about any excuses.

if dook with their team of 1 and two star jv players can have a high powered offense so can we.

Cut Godfrey. That's a start. I seriously doubt Nicks will get that money because of prior injuries. Teams will look at the Percy Harvin situation and that should add some padding.

He's going to get paid big. There will always be a few teams desperate enough for a receiver.

Shouldn't have gotten to that point

Cam did call his own number and sadly it didn't work out the way we had hoped. Everyone knew what was coming on all of those plays. We should have lined up in the gun with Tolbert and behind star so cam has the option to hand off to Tolbert and Star, or follow Tolbert and Star.

Where will we be getting the cap space from to accomplish this?

He's going to be sought after, and he wants to get paid, as he publicly declared himself as one of the best receivers in the NFL in the midst of the Giants losing season. He's going to get in the 40-60 million range, there is virtually no doubt. I don't see Gettleman doing this.

If any GM gives Nicks that kind of money , he should be fired before the ink's dry.

I think a short, $5 million a year "prove it" contract would be more than fair.

True. But we all know he's coming back, so it's kinda useless to call for his head. G-man is going to give Shula tools to improve and succeed. We will get a clearer picture next year. I hope that we are in the upper right hand quadrant.

Agreed.

As much as I would like to criticize Shula (and originally would have taken Hue Jackson, Norv Turner and Ken Whisenhunt over Shula), let's see what the offense can do with some healthy O-Lineman back, and a pick up of two NFL level receivers?........ Plus, Kejon Barner, and Brandon Williams may develop and contribute as well. That's what usually happens with receivers, especially when they have other responsibility (blocking and running to name a few).

To Shula's credit, he wanted to throw down field this season, but didn't have the right side of the OL and receivers who could get separation and buy time.

So let's see What treats Gettleman can bring to Charlotte for the offense to better compete.

Sure, you should strive for a top 10 offense. The problem is having an offense that can consistently go out and score in every 5 minutes put your defense in danger. Thats what happened the first two years under Chud.

More TDs = Defense on the field = Tired = Opponents scoring a lot of TDs

I rather keep the game close knowing that our defense are going to be able to give us a win. Add two receivers to this Shula's offense and you could really see some big changes.

Not always.

If you score early (let's say go up 14-0 by the second quarter), now  your pass rush defense can pin their ears back and go after the quarterback, making the opposition one dimensional.

That's pretty much what Carolina did during the middle part of the season when they were scoring a lot of points. They would jump out early, then make the opposition one dimensional, which helped their defense.

Of course you take the risk of "garbage yards". However, if you play your normal defense (i.e., no "prevent"), they should be fine.

Nicks, is not going to get that much.

He had a HORRIBLE YEAR, and the Giants soured on him as a gamer.

He's got something to prove, and that type of stuff goes around.

I wouldn't be surprised if he got a contract in the $5-$7 mil a year range. And maybe only for 2-3 years at that.

Nicks, hurt his reputation this year, and he's got something to prove.

He's Santonio Holmes, with out the 2-3 years of futility and griping.

I'm not saying he's a bad guy. But this may be an opportunity for the Panthers to get him cheap. If someone wants to pay him $10 mil a year, let them have him as far as I'm concerned!

Novel idea with Star (not really because Rex Ryan did it with Sheldon Richardson). I would have been grinning, but others probably would have screamed bloody murder hadn't he made it. But he probably would have made it. That's thinking outside the box right there. If Shula could only read this.

I have been meaning to go back and dig further into this but not had the time.

For some reason, it seems in back to back years when Stew came back the offense got stagnant. Not because of him per se but of trying to incorporate one person to share the ball and that changes the dynamics of things.

This is more from a quick off the top of my head thing and no hard data to back it up.

I also want to look at the OL and injuries the last 5-6 games as well as new looks the D may have showed down the stretch that weren't being shown earlier.

The team got away from some creative play calls for some reason that scored points, got others involved and Cam seemed very comfortable with those plays. In fact I think the play that drifts to the right and he comes back and throws to an open TE on the left was used a lot at Auburn and it worked here but we just stopped doing it.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
