Someone post the teams with highest TOP, offense, and defense statistics. It'll shock some of those who assume you can't have a high powered offense with high TOP and a solid defense. Actually I'm starting to believe most of our TOP is achieved from just how sluggish our team is before getting a play off, not the plays themselves.

 

We already have the number of drives extended on third downs with Cam's legs in another thread, interesting numbers. I would love to see how many drives were extended, and points gained, from Ron going for it on fourth down. I wouldn't doubt that our offense overachieved this year, the horror.

Not defending Shula, but if you are going to call for his head, at least have the whole picture. There's more to it than just total yards/points.

The ones with blinders on are hilarious. They can't notice that most of our play calls were not the right calls to make in crucial situations. And because you notice that, but they can't, their rebuttal is "Well if you know so much why don't you call up JR now and ask for a job herp derp". How about you just pay attention more or don't say anything if you don't understand football?

A lot of times this year when we needed good plays in critical times, Shula would call a play that made you go "wtf?". Teams will have film on him next year. He's going to have to adjust and come up with new strategies and learn to call the right plays in the right situations. Something he hasn't given me any hope he can do.

There was a thread about Shula the other day that teeray came into and dropped some knowledge in, he may chime in here too.

 

Anyways to me, I know what Shula is, and what he isn't. I don't think changing OC's alone will correct our faults. Some teams that you play against you can mask your deficiencies. Against the top teams in the league they get exposed, badly, it happened to us in the playoffs.

 

If we can't surround Cam with talent on the OL, and at the receiver position this offseason, it won't matter who our OC is.

 

I do have faith in Gettleman though, he knows what needs to be done.

But, what about teams like Chicago, Washington, Detroit, and Minnesota? All had better offenses, but no Playoffs.

 

You guys are a little too carried away with having a high power offense, i.e. Chud.

 

You want an offense that manages the game: Carolina, SF, and Seattle. The three last NFC teams standing.

 

Shula is the right guy for this team atm. We just need more down field weapons.

We scored more points this year than we did last year and finished identically in ranking (18th). The only difference really is a drop in yards, but we made up for it with greater time of possession and fewer turnovers (so more points-per-drive). We have an efficient offense, we just need to shore up the right side of the line and find a solid wideout to put opposite of Smitty and we'll have a much better offense.

1996 (TAM): 28th total offense, 22th rushing offense, 29th passing offense

1997 (TAM): 29th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

1998 (TAM): 22nd total offense, 4th rushing offense, 27th passing offense

1999 (TAM): 28th total offense, 15th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

2013 (CAR): 26th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 29th passing offense 

 

The best average TOP teams were New Orleans, San Diego, Detroit, Carolina, and then Cincinnati. The most efficient teams on third downs other than Carolina were Denver, San Diego, and New Orleans. These teams weren't too bad defensively either. Let's stop pretending we can't have both a high scoring offense and a tough defense, it's definitely possible.

 

Does anyone have the statistics on drives extended by Riverboat Ron's fourth down calls? We know Cam extended at least 16 drives on third down, and quite of few of them lead to points. If we're looking at the whole picture it would be help to include statistics from these crucial downs.

we just needed to score more.

 

better field positions thanks to good STs and an incredible defense made the chances of us being tops in the league for yardage quite unlikely.

 

yardage doesn't matter much at all.

 

the only thing that matters is scoring. we just didn't do it enough.

 

we scored on 36.5% of our possessions.

 

now that isn't horrible, but that is 12th in the league.

 

this offense is a clock burning one, which is fine. that being the case, though, the pace is going to be slower than most other games and the number of possessions for each team will be lower, which means lower scoring games. that also is fine.

 

what isn't fine is that we are only scoring on 36.5% of all our possessions and only getting 2.09 pts per drive (10th in the league). we have to do a better job of scoring with each drive. if we are going to be a clock managing team, more efficient team, we need to make sure that we are scoring on more drives.

 

we can find all the stats in the world talking about how efficient we are with turnovers and third downs, but if we aren't scoring on more possessions, that isn't being very efficient.

 

he have to make more of the limited opportunities to score than we have been. with the great field positions we start off with (in which we are 6th in the league), it's pretty inexcusable for us to not be scoring more.

 

i don't see us changing fundamentally our approach to the offense. it is a shula run offense so it's going to be limited. what needs to happen is for us to do more with less opportunities.

 

we have to score more. all other stats and numbers are meaningless until we can do that.

No, you want a high powered / high scoring offense. When your offense only manages the game it allows the other team to stay close. 

 

Every team should strive for a top 10 offense AND defense. The problem is most of the great D minds in football are old school and conservative ie they prefer to have a ball control / run first offense. 

 

Shula should have never in a million years been given the reigns to our O. You need a proven guy or someone with some pedigree. Shula's resume for O was in the red.
