Just another Mock of a Mock. Charlie Campbell 1/17

So far early on in all these extremely early mocks i have liked how prepared Charlie Campbell is already... Like others here do a well.

Campbell is a good early mocker, at least in addressing the Panthers' needs. All his mocks have been semi-ideal where guys are ranked today... Which if you follow the draft means NOTHING. Guys projected in the 3-4th with be in the first bc of 40 times and guys in the first will drop bc of 40 ties and short arms etc.

I hope for the draft that Chuck posted below but this is a really talented that is deep in the positions we need this season.

If Dennard, Ebron, Lee, Cryus Kojuando(sp?) is there at 28 you take them without looking back as they are elite talents at positions of need.

Charlie's New Mock: January 10, 2014

(1) Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

(2) Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt

(3) Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!! I'd really cry (joy) if we came out of the draft like this.

I agree this would be an ideal first three picks.

As of today Campell has us taking

(1) Ot/G, Zach Martin

(2) WR, Jordan Matthews

(3) WR, Paul Richardson Doubt we double up at WR in the draft.

With the guys availible in Campbell's mock today id go with addressing playmakers high. Zach Martin is supposed to be a guard and struggles with speed rushers on the outside. I think in the first you would want a more polished RT.

If using the Giants draft philosophy they draft playmakers early(if the hogmollies are in place) and use 3rd round picks on to fill OL.

(1) TE Austin Sef-Jenkins or TE Jace Amaro

Campbell has Atl drafting Jenkins in the second and that would suck to see the Falcons replace TGonz so easily with a proven playmaker with special WR skill. I think having a large target for Cam would open up third down like when Shockey was here and creates matchups on the outside for a Smitty or Ginn. Having linebackers on Olsen and Jenkins would really help move the chains even better not to mention a potentally elite red zone guy who is compared repeatedly to a Gronk or Jimmy Graham type guy.

Olsen seemed gimpy the last 7 weeks of the season with his foot injury and if we had to lose Olsen for any amout of time imagine how the passing game would have been .

(2) WR Jordan Matthews Vandy

Smart WR with great size and route running ability. Makes tough catches and excelled agaist tough SEC defenses. Duplicated his success from 2012-2013 which means he was gameplanned for extensively.

(3)CB Jason Verrett TCU or OT/G from SC

I have not watched Verrett but according to most every scouting mock thing, he has elite ball skills, speed and technique but is a bit undersized. With Munnerlyn looking for a long term deal we might be looking to replace our nickel position which was a strength this past season.

I would take that in a heart beat. I just cant see Martin being there due to the lack of OTs now. But if he was somehow there, shoot take him!

I really dont understand these mocks that keep having Matthews that late.

I must hate the Paul Richardson pick. The dude is Ted Ginn with more potential.

The Matthews thing is puzzling me. I have him as the 4th best receiver in the draft, I really, really doubt he is there late 2nd. I think Martin is a good talent, but not a first round talent. Just because the great tackles went back to school, doesn't mean teams are going to reach for an OT that is simply "good".

I also dont think Matthews will be there. Its just that I've seen too many mocks having him there that I'm trying to be open minded right now.

Remember what happened last year at OT? After Matthews and Lewan decided to stay in school, Lane Johnson and Eric Fisher names popped up as potential 1st rounders. On draft day, both were top 4 picks. Martin will likely be a 1st rounder, especially due to his ability to play guard and tackle.

If Matthews runs a solid 4.5 he may not get out the first.

I think TE Jace Amaro is an intriguing guy to possibly get. He is ranked higher than Austin Seferian Jenkins in a lot of mocks and put up huge numbers.

I really dont think hes getting put of the 1st at all.

Unless he pull a 4.7 like what Keenan did last year hes not going to get out the 1st.

    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
    • I didn't say I would have done it. I was just saying that I can see why some in the FO considered it. Everything was done to give Bryce weapons. Solidify the interior line thru FA. Get XL at WR in round 1 and then get the most talented RB in round 2. Take a TE in round 4, etc They were probably "assuming" he'd make a complete recovery during the 2024 season. I'm a skeptical person. I wouldn't have assumed he'd be ok in 2024. I personally would have taken another position in the 2nd for that very reason. But, if I were "influenced" to take him I would've argued to keep him off the field, especially seeing how things were going for us record wise. Conventional Wisdom says most backs don't get back to normal until two years after the ACL surgery. He was injured in Fall 2023. Having him suit up in 2025 would have been almost 2 years since the original injury. You have him for 3 year on low contract. If he balls out, you resign him for a couple of more years b/c he'd only have 3 years of tread on the tires. If he's ok but not great you let him walk.
