Charles Johnson's cap figure

That's the going rate for top 5 de play. Look at Peppers, Allen, CJ.... They all make similar money. I mean hell you can make an argument that no one deserves that kind of money for playing a game.

In the context of the NFL and sports, he's earned what he makes.

I guess the real argument then is, is CJ a top 5 DE talent? I'm not so sure

He isn't a sack specialist. He is an overall talented player.

Lots of people think a DE making that much should be putting up OLB sack totals. When CJ was completely healthy last year he had 12.5 sacks, 7 forced fumbles and 42 total tackles. This year he missed a couple games and still put up 11.5 sacks. That is an all around elite defensive end

Hurney really fuged us at the end of the 2010 season. It's like JR got tired of everyone saying he was cheap and so he just gave Marty the checkbook and told him to spend as he saw fit.  Then Hurney, maybe while dabbling in the powder, gave SB MVP-type extensions to a bunch of guys on a 2-14 team.

Yes he did.  I believe it was the year after the CBA negotiations and we were starting over.  We went from being in a great situation (cap wise) to hand-cuffed again.  I believe CJ could have been signed for less money and the Stewart / Williams contracts were bad.

Hurney seemed like a decent guy but wasn't cerebral enough to manage the big picture and be an effective GM.  After his firing, I don't recall ANY news about teams talking with him about a GM position.

Hurney wasn't a "football" guy.

He never had a philosophy, nor did he have a direction.

Very poor GM, especially when it came to understanding how to build a team.

The reality is JR handcuffed the team. He put a hold on basically all new contracts or extensions for a year. Them the next year he wanted to make a splash. It just so happened that the timing was terrible as we should have locked up these guys a season earlier which likely would have meant reduced rates. There is no explanation for the jstew deal though, that one was just silly. I'd through Godfrey into that same mix.

We might no extend Cam. if we pick up his option I believe he would get paid the average of the top 10 Qbs in the League. which money wise would be good for him

We will exercise the 5th year option then try and negotiate a long term agreement.  The cap hit should be relatively low for year 1 and 2 on a long term deal . After all at his age we can easily make it a 7 or 8 year contract with no problem.  Could cost as little as 5 or 6 million in cap hit the first year which isn't more than we paid him this year. Sure it will escalate down the road but by then the TV should finally hit and give us the cap room we need.  That and getting rid of the dead cap money should allow us to keep Hardy long term if that is what he and Gettleman want to do. After all his contract could be cheap in the first few years as well.  As long as we don't guarantee too much, we should be okay.  On the other hand, I have no idea what Gettleman is thinking.

Hurney fuged us with no vaseline

And so did JR letting him rape us

They were hoping for a Ravens kind of run. Get to the playoffs, win the Super Bowl and then cut your losses with everyone else. With the money you earn from merchandising, endorsements, royalties, and payouts you can afford to have an off year after the Super Bowl. They really didn't do it to maintain long term success.
