Or it's motivation for cam by saying go do it again next year and you will be rewarded with money and a few weapons, I think gettleman can play that line to cam and cam will buy it! We have pressing needs before cam gets his big deal.

Letting Cam see that option is playing with fire....starts giving him more power and options.

CJ and a couple others restrucutred their contracts last year. They need to again: CJ, Olsen, Smitty, Davis, Khalil.

Especially JONATHAN STEWART!!!!

I think thus far, cj has done everything in his power to live up to that contract. No he doesn't put up flashy sack totals (like 20+) but he is one of the most complete DEs in the league. He's an adept pass rusher, stout against the run, and the defense doesn't do very well when he isn't starting.

I do not necessarily believe CJ's contract is out of place. The two highest paid positions in the NFL are passers and the dudes who can get after the passer (aka DE). CJ might not register all the sacks but he puts a ton of pressure and hurries on opposing QBs.

Hurney definitely gave out some what-the-hells, but this is the one that actually was the most decent.  Keep in mind when it happened, we knew Atlanta was going to make an offer, we just lost Peppers and Johnson had proved he had big time talent.  He is a complete DE, there aren't a ton of those in the league.

Exactly. You could throw left tackle into that mix too.

 

And if anyone wonders why pass rushers make so much money, the odds of scoring a TD during a drive in which the QB is sacked are much, much worse than drives not containing a sack.

 

CJ has earned his money. But yeah, we definitely need to do some restructuring to get his cap charge lower.

The ideal move "IMO" would be to actually at a couple of years to CJ's deal. Convert some salary to bonus and prorate all that across the board.

His current deal runs till he is 31, add two years and he can retire a Panther at 33.

pay the man, just make it work so our cap doesnt say he is worth 16 mil a year.  there are ways to do this.  he is not getting paid 16 mil this year.  that is the issue at hand

CJ was not worth that salary and that is not to his detriment. No DE in the NFL is worth the type of money that CJ is making. It is a ridiculous contract.

That's the going rate for top 5 de play. Look at Peppers, Allen, CJ.... They all make similar money. I mean hell you can make an argument that no one deserves that kind of money for playing a game.

In the context of the NFL and sports, he's earned what he makes.

At his rate and salary cap we could have we could put 8 players on our team!!  I can't count high enough to tell what our 53 man roster would cost at 16 mil each.  Maybe claim insurance for last GM getting head injury.

Speaking of Hardy it might be as the movie title"Release the Kraken" no team can pay this much to 4 players and stay in salary cap.  Cam coming up Luke the same.  16x10=160mil.

I don't think they take the chance of not giving him a new deal. Best bet is to try and lock him in for under 20 million a season while they can.

he's going to see $20 Million a year even if you extend him now.

CJ is only making about 7.4 million in 2014 before any re-structuring. The rest is allocated charges from prior signing bonuses.

 

The problem in large part is that Hurney backloaded the deal to keep the cap charge low when he was first signed. Unfortunately, Gettleman now has to clean up his mess.
