Charles Johnson's cap figure

Man Strength

The ideal move "IMO" would be to actually at a couple of years to CJ's deal. Convert some salary to bonus and prorate all that across the board.

His current deal runs till he is 31, add two years and he can retire a Panther at 33.

I've heard a lot of estimates. a guess between 15-25 is more fitting.

They have 17 for sure, question is how much carry over is left. Last I saw it was around 10 million.

Cap should be around 128 and Carolina is sitting at 110 and some change.

Still not a lot though with 21 spots to fill and quite a few starters to either bring back or replace. Then you have extending cam's contract as well.

We might no extend Cam. if we pick up his option I believe he would get paid the average of the top 10 Qbs in the League. which money wise would be good for him

I don't think they take the chance of not giving him a new deal. Best bet is to try and lock him in for under 20 million a season while they can.

Cam is goin into his 4th and final year of his rookie deal. We would not have to exercise the 5th year option until next year obviously.

We don't really have to extend Cam this year but I do see the merits of doing it now rather than ending up in a Flacco type cap Russian roulette.

Letting Cam see that option is playing with fire....starts giving him more power and options.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking when I posted this topic. How much could we save this year by doing this, without totally screwing ourselves in a few years?

Just makes him an expensive older player in 4 or so years.

Who knows how much could be saved....

Yep, he's expensive. I'm very curious to see how DG navigates this cap mess. I imagine some if it will be by asking a few guys to literally take one for the team. Honestly, I hope signing a bunch of high character pays dividends very soon with regard to the cap and the overall good of the team.

I have a feeling we could retain both S for a Small sum. Gin may walk for hopes of more money, I also see whorton doing the same.

Actually, we have to decide this off-season whether to exercise the option or not.

Disagree, I think he earned his contract and has played up to it. Part of the problem was that he was the only good DE in that FA class and we had to keep him here with here, particularly with Atlanta looking to sign him if we didn't. We got a monster DE and ATL was left with Ray Edwards.

CJ was and is definitely worth his contract and cap hit. He's like top 5 in sacks, pressures, hits and FF over the last 3 seasons.

Also if you count the carryover from this season, Carolina should have around 20-30 million in cap space before extending Cam.

CJ was not worth that salary and that is not to his detriment.  No DE in the NFL is worth the type of money that CJ is making.  It is a ridiculous contract.

Hurney really fuged us at the end of the 2010 season. It's like JR got tired of everyone saying he was cheap and so he just gave Marty the checkbook and told him to spend as he saw fit.  Then Hurney, maybe while dabbling in the powder, gave SB MVP-type extensions to a bunch of guys on a 2-14 team.
