Franchise Tag rules explained (hopefully)

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure a franchised player can be traded for whatever the teams agree on. If a non-exclusive franchised player negotiates with another team and the original team doesn't match the offer the compensation is the next two first round picks from the signing team. But that's if the player negotiates with another team, cutting the original team out of the loop. If we franchise Hardy and he signs the tender, we could then turn around and trade him for whatever we wanted to, no subsequent "offsetting trades" or anything like that necessary. *I think*

That would mean Hardy signed the one year contract he was offered for $12.8 million. At that point, he could be traded the same as any other player for what the hell ever. Before signing that contract, the compensation is two first rounders, no discussion.

As for the RFA stuff, I have no idea.

Just learned this myself while researching tenders and tags.

3 years service = RFA

4 years service = UFA

All drafted rookies get 4 year deals (with fifth year options for first rounders).

Didn't realize the nonesclusive was non-negation able.

you missed transition tag

blaaaaaarg

This Kraken stuff is so reminding me of the Peppers debacle.

2 major changes here.

No chance Gettleman completely hamstrings the Panthers offseason moves by FTing 76 and eventually being forcred to ink him sometime in July as our previous bumbling cap idiot/GM did.

Kraken is not Peppers. A moody sometimes motivated football player who had evidently zero trade value as evidenced by Hurney completely mismanaging player personnel moves for not one but two years.

If Getts perceives Hardy has some trade value he will A: FT Hardy and attempt to get value for him as the Patriots did for Matt Cassel.

B: blink if the market is not there and withdraw the Tag, waiting for Compensatory picks a year later as we did in the 3rd round for Peppers after Hurney's complete failures.

Keys to note a successful outcome:

Cassel, who hadn't started the previous seven seasons with Southern California and the Patriots, led New England to an 11-5 record, but no playoff berth, after Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opener -- on a hit by Kansas City's Bernard Pollard, who said it was an "accident."

Cassel's steady improvement sent his stock soaring as he entered free agency. So the Patriots put the franchise tag on him, requiring any team that signed him to give them two first-round picks. But that tag would have cost the Patriots $14.65 million if they kept Cassel as insurance if Brady's health was questionable.

Patriots accepted 2nd round (pick 34) compensation for Cassell, another brilliant New England player personnel move.

Kraken must be  FT'd and moved early in the process for substantially less than the tag requires. Don't be fugging greedy people.

This is the key here.

Teams are no oblivious to our team, its needs and its cap space.

They know we will struggle to keep a intact core if we have pay hard the franchise tag.

Something like a pair of seconds (14/15), a 1st and a pair of 3rds (14, 14, 15) an early second (14, Raiders/Jacksonville). Would be an excellent compensation for a player we picked in the 6th, got insane production vs compensation value, and likely can't afford to keep.

We can work additional picks, but that deal would technically have to be seperate from the actual deal that moves Hardy. So say we trade with Oakland. Oakland sends us their 2014 and 2015 first rounders, we send Hardy. Then, we trade Oakland the 2015 pick for their 2014 third rounder. It's also possible that we would get someone's 2015 and 2016 selections, but only if the deal happens after this year's draft.

As for the RFA stuff, I have no idea.

Ok, that makes sense. So we could negotiate the trade for two first rounders and then we would have to make a clause in the dealings that says we will then trade one of the first rounders they gave us for a 3rd rounder in a separate trade after the original one goes through, even though it would make sense to just do a first and third to begin with.

it's almost like a "take my word for it" kind of a trade in a sense then.

Letting the player hit free agency unrestricted would accomplish the same thing. The new CBA pretty much made the transition tag a useless thing.

You might be mistaken.

We over payed CJ by something like $15-20M to keep him from going to Atl. If Atl set the price we could have matched it or let him walk if it was more than we wanted to pay.

Its only worthless if you are Hurney.
