All bias aside, which WR has the best route running?

To be honest I want Matthews more than any WR.

The guy has good athletic ability but not the combine warrior that make the GM's go WOW like Watkins.

As good of an Athlete as Smith is what makes him so good is his will and fundamentals

He catches balls he block he is fluid on his routes he knows when to come back to help the QB.  Smitty while fast ran only a 4.38 at the fastest.  There 2-3 guys that run atleast that every year who are also bigger and stronger.  Matthews is similar, many many people here will disagree with me here but he is the best #2 possibility for smitty Ever more than moose (moose was getting up in age with smitty)  The guy is smart and can see him soaking up what Proehl coach him.

I would love to Draft Matthews, but that situation scares me. I don't know if he and Cam can exist in the same offense together. Matthews is going to be a high reception/route runner type receiver. But, to utilize him the best, he needs an accurate QB with really good timing, something that a gunslinger QB isn't going to bring, honestly.

Now, if you pair Matthews with someone like Alex Smith, who can time the poo out of routes, then he would be incredibly dangerous on the field.

I'm not sure I think he would be perfect for Cam.  You want a young receiver to grow with Cam, this kid is smart and those 2 will help each other.

The guy is Fluid

Smart-luckily we have Proehl to coach him, he is going to soak some info in like a sponge.

I seem to remember a Certain WR for the 49ers back in the day who didnt have super size, track speed, basketball hops etc.  but was very fluid and fundamentally sound.  He did quite well with 2 Gun Slinger QB's

Yeh that would be Matthews cousin Mr Rice....Mr Jerry Rice

Matthews isnt going to have to be The guy either.  He is going to be #2 with a potential future HOF.

The more I watch clips of him and read up on him the more and more I want him.  There are so many kids that come out every year Kill the combine Kill it in school etc etc who just dont pan out.  Matthews just has the IT factor, just like his cousin he has very measurements but kid just has something about him.  I'd rather have a guy like that for a Young gun slinging QB who is still working on to improve his passing game.  Super smart kid who knows the game can help sit down talk work with and grow with the QB.  Super athletes boom bust (see Ted Ginn dominant in college killed the combine cant miss WR prospect).

Jerry Rice is a nice example of who Matthews COULD be similar to, in terms of ability. But, they ran a true WCO, which we do not run... Not even close. So, I don't think he'll fit Cam and this offense, but I think he will end up being the best of the receivers.

WCO or not the reason Rice was so good was his overall fundamentals and knowledge of the game.  Smith right now has lost as step and 9 out of 10 teams have corners who can stay step for step with him.  Smith just fundamentally sound can get open.

One thing that stands out with Smith more than most WR in the league right now is his knowledge of the game.  Time after Time after Time you see him make comeback routes helping the QB when they are in pressure.

Another example.  Marvin Harrison.  While Peyton Manning is another HOF QB.  Harrison grew with Manning, good fundamentals, smart, etc.  Not a combine killer.    He is now up for the HOF ballet I believe next year.

Matthews is going to get open, going to make tough catches, know what to do when the QB is in trouble.  You see super athletes every year who killed it in college (see Ginn) the BIG Receivers who dominated college (Jarrett).  IMO Matthews is one of the smartest most fundamentally sound WR to come out in a Long Long Long time.  If he was the super athlete, played at a bigger school and dominated he'd be top 5 pick no doubt in my mind

He is the Russell Wilson of WR's

You're preaching to the choir. I love Matthews. He's not the Russell Wilson of WRs though. He's not undersized (6'3 210) and he dominated every major statistical category for a receiver in SEC history.

It isn't like Matthews isn't on anyone's radar. He's been talked about for three years now as the entirety of the Vanderbilt offense. He's legit.

But, again, I don't think he fits with Cam. Cam isn't a precision passer. Cam isn't going to be able to put Matthews in position for then both to succeed. What Cam needs is a guy who can get physical separation at the line of scrimmage immediately. (I've now watched over 25 of Matthews games, that's not Matthews.)

Matthews wins with finesse. We need a guy who wins with power and ability, then complement that player with another receiver who wins with speed.

Yep.  I agree to an extent but behind Short, it sure seemed like the Panthers were looking crazy hard at Keenan Allen in the 2nd who I find very similar to Matthews.  If the staff saw a potential fit with Allen, what do you think sets him apart from Matthews?  Try to look prior to KA's rookie season because he got the same flack.

IMO, Matthews has great upside so I don't get the whole lack of ceiling argument.  He may be well refined but it doesn't mean he can't get even better than he already is.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
    • Since we play the Panthers today and tmrw, we will have one gigantic double thread for both games. Today’s game is at 3pm and tmrw is 7pm.    After beating the Rangers and sending the those yankee bastards back to Cary, we get the Champs in the house.  Clean up the defense, no more lazy clears, and score baby score.  LFG CANES!
