PFF Ranks Offensive Lines

I think the O-Line played well for the most part, especially considering how much people were panicking over how many holes it had. Granted Cam was the 5th most sacked QB, but some of them will be on him for holding onto the ball too long.

I can't say if I'd rank it as the 10th best O-Line. But mid way to top half could be fair. Though without watching the games of other O-Lines I could honestly not say.

That said, I think Gettleman will look to improve the line. But WR should be the priority in the first round unless there is no one of value to be taken at that point.

They are loyal to anything Panthers. Which is fine, just not realistic if the goal is to improve.

True

I remember the collecive Huddle orgasm when we signed DWill and Stewart to their long term deals.

Very few could see the storm clouds on the horizon

As you think you know better, please share how much coaches film you have been watching this year?

I don't even know how they decided how they graded everyone not knowing what was called or individual assignments. But I surely have no interest or expertise to do better. I have a life and a fulltime career. I just said it is hard to believe. Unlike many here I claim no great expertise other than my chosen field which is surely not football.

People seem to forget that we had a very hard schedule this year which was predicted to be the hardest in the league at the beginning of the year. If I remember correctly 9 of our games were against teams with defenses in the top half of the league which had to be one of the most among teams.

I think you are remembering plays and not looking at the bigger picture.  Sure we struggled at time but I bet they were saying the same thing when they played us.

That's right. I supposed the question should have been: Is the problem slow receivers? Is it bad route running? Is it subpar o-line play? Is it just tough defense? I did not take strength of schedule into account.

Gross will be 34 during next season.  Many good OTs have lasted 13+ seasons into their late 30s (Munoz, Willie Anderson, you can find a ton) so I can see him having 2 years left in the tank.

I like having Wharton back.  Kalil is Kalil.

Basically, our right side is baad at pass blocking.  ....but if people argue that Bell can stay as our backup, you can say the same, or even more about Nate Chandler who I thought did just as bad but good enough to stay.  People think he was just a DT before...but prior to that in college, he was a Tight End and an OT.

If you have a foundation of a good OT and Kalil, that RG position doesn't look as bad already.  That said, Bakhtiari was a 4th rounder.

One of the issues with having so many 1 year contracts is that it takes time to develop chemistry between a wide receiver and quarterback.  Look at Ginn this year, he kept getting better as the year went on.  If we don't resign him we start over with a new crew.  Part of continuity is developing chemistry and trust in each other.  The other part is that Ricky Proehl does a great job with route running and development of WRs.  Rather than get rid of a guy like LaFell I think you just resign him to number 3 money and find some help for Smitty.  If LaFell gets more money elsewhere you move on.

But to your question I don't think it is 1 thing but a combination of a number of factors.

OL is a must. DG said you cant look at the situation year to year. Your going to get screwed by that. You need to project 3 yrs and 5 yrs down the line. Kalil is our only sure thing 3 and 5 yrs down. Gross and Wharton probably will play maybe 1-2 more seasons. What kind of situation are we in when Gross and Wharton retire? Kalil Amini Bell ? ? --> scary thought we could be the giants of this year.

Well barring 1 move for an OT (which doesn't have to be in the first round), with Amini back, you can put him at RG and keep the Gross-Wharton side well and good.  Maybe draft more depth at OG late and go OT in rd 1-3 but again, it doesn't necessarily have to be the first round.

Gross-Wharton-Kalil-Amini-FA/Draft

...with maybe more draft picks, Kugbila, Bell, and Chandler as line depth.

That is a good viewpoint for next year but if you want the panthers to continue this success your going to need a wider vision for the future. DG hinted at this you got see your team like   /    and not like |  |  .   Our Oline will tank after 1-2 years when Gross and Wharton are gone. Oline is probably the 3rd most important element aside from QB and Defensive pressure.
