PFF Ranks Offensive Lines

Can anyone who watched the whole season say anything positive about our run blocking? I can't.

Can anyone make an argument for the right side of our o line?

Pff's stats are just as subjective as ESPN's QBR.

If evaluating production in Football was a simple as scanning a stat sheet, then all the crucial film study during the offseason would be useless.

Football stats are so intangled with one another that giving too much credence to most individual stats can be a serious mistake.

My point being, the eyeball test does have significant value in football and has to be used in conjuntion witn statistics to obtain an accurate assesment of play.

Why would he have any catches? We're not asking him to run routes. He does a very, very good job doing what we ask him to and he does it as well as anybody in the league. If you want to argue that blocking tight ends should have their receptions factored in, why not downgrade all the receiving tight ends for being crap blockers?

So who is better, Greg Olsen or Ben Hartsock?  By the way, they do downgrade the receiving tights end for being bad blockers.  That is the only reason Hartsock is ranked so high.  They factor in blocking for tight ends far too much.  They do it for receivers as well.  It is why Gordon supposedly wasn't a top five receiver this season but Brandon Marshall was the #1 receiver for them (he is a very good blocker, but it should not vault him ahead of a guy like Calvin).  Same with Nelson being #2.

I will just say this.  Basing your opinion off PFF's ratings is ill-advised.  Base your opinion off what you see.  From what I saw, our offensive line progressed so much this season as far as pass protection goes.  However, the run blocking was horrific.  They were absolutely not 9th best in the league in that regard.  PFF does some nice things but they do not know when to assign the blame to a player or not because they do not understand schemes and they have incredible biases.  Evan Mathis to them has been a top five NFL player and the best guard in the NFL for 4 or so years in a row now.

I don't care what the PFF crap says that's a bunch of Bull. Cam is the big reason they looked better then they are. Cam was the most hit QB & if he wasn't able to escape it would have been very bad.

Gross played better then expected & hopefully has 2 yrs left in him. Need to get a tace to take his place.

I think Amini pans out if he stays healthy. Wharton did a good jump, but doesn't get much of a push & slow getting to the 2nd level .

Kalil did good still think he's overrated!

Chandler has potential just got thrown in there way to early.

Bell sucks! Would make a great back up.

We need fresh bodies to push the pile & get to the 2nd level not just hold their ground for the most part.

OLine are bigger projects then about any other position & need time to work on their Technique & strength.

I do think we have good depth moving forward if we can keep it just need 2 studs.

We will have Gross coming back. We've invested an early second and early 4th into our Guards. Wharton will be back. Unless Kalil is struck by a comet, we're set a C. We need competition at RT. Conversely, we have nothing at WR other than a mid-thirties Steve Smith. And while we all enjoy watching a 24 year old have to piggy-back the entire offense, it's probably time to invest a little and get someone else that another team would actually respect/fear.

The extra 1/1.5 seconds of protection you'd be getting by upgrading at G isn't going to do anything when LaFell is taking 14 minutes to finish out his curl or highpointing to pop up balls meant for other players.

so true and funny.

The ranking is misleading.

The only positively starting graded lineman we have are: Kallil, Gross and Wharton.(Amini is positive but injured).

Bell, Scott and Chandler are ALL negatively graded.

Therefore our line is being carried by the Left side and the Center. The right side is a huge weakness and also reflects in the grading.

Well, accumulating yards and touchdowns is more important than blocking if you're a skill player. It advances the offense and gets you more points.

I'm not bashing Hartsock or anything. I'd love to keep him as a blocker. But the fact that only like, Jimmy Graham and Vernon Davis are considered better than him according to their grading system is dumb.

Both Dwill and Stew are washed up, but still need to upgrade at RT. Hopefully Wharton will be retain wo we can move Amini to the right side.

Why move Amini to RG? He was good and getting better at LG. Moving Wharton to RG, seems a much better/easier decision.

We also have Kugbila, who I'm still a wait an see on.

And yeah, 1 legit RT/LT will improve or O-line dramatically.

This seems to be more of a ranking of LT rather than the performance of the OL. Like I said, when they want to be favorable to a QB they poo on the OL and when they hate the QB they rank the OL top 10. Watching the playoffs, there is no way the Colts OL is not top 10. I kept commenting how much time Luck had in the pocket. Football is too much a sport of opinion.

I just dont want to mess up the left side with Gross and Wharton. Amini looked mighty good during that Cardinals game, but he never really made that position his. Imo, moving Amini to RG wouldnt be as difficult as moving Wharton. I want consistency. That's all.

To be fair to Amini, he only played 171 snaps, so he didn't get enough time to really lock down the spot. However he was definitely growing into that spot(remember he's still learning)

Amini is younger and still has lots of room to grow at LG. Why make his learn a new O-line spot, rather continue his growth at LG? We know what Wharton is and is more than capable of playing RG.

Just my 2 cents.
