PFF Ranks Offensive Lines

We have a really, really good left side (Gross, Wharton, Kalil), so I'm not surprised we rank so highly. The problem is our other side is utter garbage. I expect having Amini Silatolu and Edmund Kugbila back will help shore up guard a bit, but we need to get our right tackle situation resolved immediately... there is no way Byron Bell or Nate Chandler should be starting yet. If we can re-sign Gross and Wharton, either Silatolu or Kugbila establish themselves as starters in the RG spot, and we get a decent RT, then we'll be a top ten line.

PFF is dumb.

They assign screens to defenders and say they allowed a catch/yards for them... uh... how exactly do you defend a screen? The best you can do is tackle the RB as soon as they catch it.

If there's a hole in zone coverage that a receivers get into, they force it onto a defender. That is stupid.

They have certain people analyze the same teams which can lead to heavy biases obviously. Some analysts think pressures look differently, etc.

Then their arbitrary grading system is fuging retarded. I don't know why anyone cares about that. JJ Watt literally had a higher rating this year than he did last. Ben Hartsock was the second ranked tight end I think. It's... stupid. Anyone who pays for premium stats is wasting their money.

If you don't think Ben Hartsock is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league you have no idea what you are talking about. PFF has a lot of things wrong but grading him so highly is not one of them - our line is so much better when he is healthy and taking some slack off our right side.

Stats are just numbers. For the vast majority of the season the o-line just didn't pass the "eye test". No fancy metrics or convoluted scoring systems they just didn't look good.

Cam does hold the ball too long sometimes and then decides to roll backwards into the edge rush. Can't really fault the line for that. But if there was a thing that long time Panthers fans can easily recognize, it's a good o-line. We've had some in our time here. This years line just didn't meet those past examples.

This 100% people are going a little overboard here.  They see Cam get hit or sacked and automatically they blame the OL right off the bat and dont look at the situation.  So everyone is praising the San Fran OL here but.........as it was beat like a drum shown numerous times on the telecast Cam had More time back there than Kaep in the 1st until they started bringing the house.   Sure sounds like our OL is weaker.  Bell isnt good but evenJake Matthews isnt going to come in blocking 2 guys himself over there.  Their OL opened the run game?   Think again, listen to those talking heads on tv, they start hitting those passes McDermotts Blitz D can't blitz as much bringing guys back to help in coverage.  Less people in the box=more running lanes for Gore=Gore running free the second half.

The Nola loss it was pointed out over and over and over again our line holding up and showed every possession WR failing miserably to get open.  This isnt college football you are not going to have a star OL with mobile QB staying up right for 30 seconds or so then throw it down field.  Kaep who had LESS time than Cam just ripped us apart.

Why?  Not because the OL the OL that has only drafted 4 guys in the first 2-3 rounds since 06 because the Weapons.

San Fran- Crabtree top WR in the draft that year was projected next big thing similar to AJ Green coming out some thought could come out as a sophomore, Davis #1 TE in the Draft that year one of the top 2-3 TE's in the league currently, FA pickup Manningham who's stock value was about what Hakeem Nicks is Currently, Boldin, they even drafted a WR in the 1st just 2-3 years back but got buried in the depth chart and finally just traded away.  We're BEGGING for a first rounder WR and they have enough weapons that they can cut ties with their #1 pick within 2 years if they don't show progress!

San Fran with that same OL while still a playoff contender they were not one of the top 2-3 teams.  Once Crabtree came back, Davis got healthy that offense was night and day.

Keep building up the OL but come on lets be Real this is Big boy football in the NFL your not going to wait around 15+seconds like sandlot football until someone finally breaks open.  Teams are not going to be afraid and Cram in the Box your SuperStar OL is not going to go through a Crowded box taking throwing people around.  They are Not going to hold 5-6rushers every play.   You gotta get Weapons or your going to get to the playoffs with the big boys playing against big boy defenses and get stomped just like this year just like 08 just like 05 (minus Smitty going super saiyan mode we would have been one and done)

That being Said if Gettleman does Go OL doubles OL, I'm not going to be mad because ultimately I think he has a solid plan in place to build the team.  And I'm not 100% believing into him drafting OL off the bat off what he said today.  Question asked initially what he said about last year with Hog Molly's and he said it all starts with the big guys.  He feels that they are good enough with that group being healthy he may think bigger holes need work

We will have Gross coming back. We've invested an early second and early 4th into our Guards. Wharton will be back. Unless Kalil is struck by a comet, we're set a C. We need competition at RT. Conversely, we have nothing at WR other than a mid-thirties Steve Smith. And while we all enjoy watching a 24 year old have to piggy-back the entire offense, it's probably time to invest a little and get someone else that another team would actually respect/fear.

The extra 1/1.5 seconds of protection you'd be getting by upgrading at G isn't going to do anything when LaFell is taking 14 minutes to finish out his curl or highpointing to pop up balls meant for other players.

It's not that he isn't great at blocking...

He missed three games, had zero catches, and was ranked higher than Greg Olsen with their +/- system. If you don't think that's a bit ridiculous, well... I don't know what else I can say.

Why would he have any catches? We're not asking him to run routes. He does a very, very good job doing what we ask him to and he does it as well as anybody in the league. If you want to argue that blocking tight ends should have their receptions factored in, why not downgrade all the receiving tight ends for being crap blockers?

Like someone said, left side is old and will soon go away.  Right side should go away now, so, we do need to invest for sure

New guy on right to transfer to LT in another year or so give you the time to bring him along while you still have the luxury of having Gross.  G will be okay I think
