Priority Number 1 - Offensive Line

I believe they could improve on what we had this year anywhere in rounds 1 and 2. Not elite, but better than what we got by with.

The problem with 2 picks on the o-line is that you ignore the other holes. The team needs a only good RT if Gross and Wharton return (Amini from IR). If Gross retires, I would endorse double dipping, because Cam was getting killed.

Gettleman needs to show that he's more ruthless than Hurney. Having Bell as RT for three years is ridiculous. He needs to be a backup.

So just recently as yesterday Pro Football Focus released their 2013 Offensive line rankings and the Panthers were rated as the 8th best in the league. Now they do mention that upgrades could be made on the right side but overall they give praise to the Panther Offensive line performance.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/01/13/2013-offensive-line-rankings/4/

They are not the only one's that seem to think highly of them. Many analysts (and ones I respect such as Greg Cosell) have also given praise to the O-line throughout much of the year. This won't go over well with some but one thing that is mentioned is that Cam is holding on to the ball too long even when receivers are getting separation and are open. They also mention that he has to improve when it comes to "throwing open" his receivers. They aren't saying this in a negative Cam bashing way, but just giving assesment of what they see when breaking down film. They of course point out his abilty to extend plays with his legs and overall strength when protection breaks down.

I am not a big football stat geek and especially not when it comes to offensive line but it's odd when many people seem to have such a negative view of the o-line while the very few "experts" I take seriously that spend all their time breaking down film tend to see other issues (not just Cam) with the offense  that are not O-line related.

I don't pay close attention to O-line play and really don't have on opinion on the subject but I just thought I would throw that out there because I have heard so many others praising the O-line for overachieving in many ways throughout the year.

I don't disagree with this... Cam was hesitant on passes and it led to some unnecessary sacks at times.  I did see some improvement from him during the season with throwing guys open and releasing the ball before WR's made their break.

HOWEVER, because it's Johnny Rockets...

HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT OUR QB???

I'm not saying use both picks on OL, but definitely one of them.

We now have Lovie Smith in our division. Its only going to get more physical in the trenches.

I agree. It would be great to draft a future LT and to play him RT for a season and get a weapon for Cam.

When Amini returns and new RT, the run game will be better.

You're not expecting me to argue against this, I assume?

If I can pull off my trip to Charlotte, you and I need to do a video blog or essay or something where we essentially geek out over our respective love for the lines; you can rant and rave about how offensive line is more important, and I'll defend defensive line until I'm blue in the face.  Granted, you look far closer to an offensive lineman than I do, since the two closest players to my size on the team are Steve and Deangelo, but...

Not really a OT with a first round grade expected to be left at 28th, You'd be left with guys that have clear 2nd or 3rd round grades in James Hurst in the second round or Morgan Mosses in the third at OT.

At guard you're looking at a handful of players with grades in the first 3 rounds. Not a whole lot to pick from guard wise in this draft. You have Cyril Richardson and Xavier Su'a-filo in the late first or second round area. Anthony Steen or Gabe Jackson in the second round. With Chris Watt Being a late 2nd to 3rd round pick.

There's just not a lot of prospects that are going to be there worth a pick that early in the draft at OG. The OT prospects that are going to be available are meh at best. No upgrade what so ever over Gross and very little upgrade over Bell.

Unless Zach Martin or Taylor Lewan fall there just isn't going to be an OL prospect worth the pick.

You might be able to get a top two CB or High level WR at the 28th pick. There's a chance that Justin Gilbert will be there at 28th and there's a good chance that Carolina can snag Kelvin Benjamin or Allen Robinson there in the late first.

After that if there's a player that's rated high enough to go in the 2nd at the team's pick then they'll probably pull the trigger. I think it's more likely that the OL is fixed through FA then with a bunch of picks in the draft.

OT: Jordan Gross, Byron Bell, Nate Chandler
OG: Amini Silatolu, Travelle Wharton, Edmund Kugbila
C: Ryan Kalil, Geoff Hangartner

Garry Williams can't stay healthy so he might as well walk, same with Chris Scott. Hangartner is a locker room favorite and knows the system. Might as well stick around. Kugbila is sticking around as a project. Chandler and Bell I see no reason to not keep as depth. Wharton is as good a stop gap as you can get. Silatolu is obviously going to start next year. Gross has starter ability.

I wouldn't be opposed to Greg Robinson/Cameron Erving/Antonio Richardson. Or maybe sign Jared Veldheer to become the new franchise LT.

Only if it's a high school team, maybe.  In the pros, I'm kicker/punter material.

(or, more likely, coach/front office)

How long do you think it will take for them to gel and start working well together under Shula. 1 game? 4 games? 8?

I think with the train wreck they had at the beginning of the season with injuries, our O line coaches did a heck of a job holding things together - I think if we can stay healthy that whoever G man brings in either via FA or the draft will be a pretty solid front  next year - better than this year for sure.

    • his height, size and arm will forever cause problems and limitations...that is what it is.  I think to a degree, the law of averages is just coming into play a bit with him.  So as he plays more and more, you just flat out get the decent days mixed in too.  Which is just going to happen.
    • Good point. He's definitely better in 10-15 yards. I think that's his biggest improvement. But he wasn't 3-10 +15, he was 3-7, with at least one drop (minor but still). And with multiple passes at 14 yards completed. This passing chart doesn't look like at By one, lol. He threw more "deep" passes than Mahomes (NOT comparing him to Mahomes in a skill way lol), or at least more beyind 10 yards.
    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
