What is this forum with contrarian retards? If the NFL experts, and most huddlers have a consensus on something some dipshit has to come out and show how truly little they know about the game of football.

Every defense rivera has coached, they have been top of the league. Including a #1 ranked defense in SD with a bunch of no names.

The thing is that this defense likes to only rush 4 and play man coverage by the corners. That requires good personnel.  When he was in San Diego he ran a 3-4 which allows for less talented guys as you are using scheme to make up for average talent.  DEs are at a premium and often take years to develop.  Look how long it took Hardy to develop into who he is now.  We are going to want to go deep in the playoffs next year not take time to develop guys.  We need players as well as potential.

You guys don't give DG enough credit... look what he did in just the short time he's been here, plucked virtual no-names out of the air and made this team instantly relevant. He may not be able to fill all of our holes with top quality talent, but he will find guys who play hard and will fit our system.

You obviously don't get it.  He has been very creative this year as evidenced by the number of times we have had wide open receivers that Cam has hit quite often if given the time to throw.  Anyone who expected us to be in the top half of the offensive standings with a bottom ten receiver group and bottom 5 offensive line knows nothing about football.

Chud also was at the top of the league in three and outs.  I will take a sustained drive most times and TOP and an occasional score versus 3 or 4 straight 3 and outs and then the occasional big play.  Or did we forget that we scored as many points under Shula then we did in 2012 under Chud.  But lets ignore that because we want big plays not wins, right??

Get off your high horse, as usual.  We can do both: have big plays and win.  Make all the excuses that you want. I saw every game that the Panthers had in their entirety this year except for the Giants massacre. Furthermore, I have been watching football in some form or fashion for the last 40 years. I am not an expert in schemes or technique by any means, but there is something to be said for an experienced eye.

Why do you think we won so many games this year? Huh? Well, let me tell you in a word. Defense! For you to insinuate that it was due to Shulaball is disingenuous. And you referring to the Panthers O-line as bottom 5 and the receiving corps as bottom 10 is coming out of your ass to support our argument. You are wrong on both accounts. I am not going to bore you with the stats, or the opinions of the experts based upon advanced metrics and statistical analysis, but you would sound a lot more like you actually know what you're talking about if you would do a little research.

DG has done a good job and he will fill holes that he can.  Still, there are a number of holes to still fill and if we can work it out with Hardy, then our front seven is largely set.  Then we can work on the secondary and offense.

You know why they weren't even worse than they were??  Shula took what he had and ran a system tailored to the personnel instead of running his system regardless of the personnel.  That is why he involved everyone and was so open to suggestions and ideas unlike Chud who knew all the answers.  He spread the ball and got everyone involved because we didn't have any superstars.

If you want to look at how Shula ball helped the defense go back to some posts that Teeray made about how our defense improved because they were not on the field as long and forced other teams to drive the length of the field to score.  Offense and defense go hand and hand.

And the FACT remains that Shula did less with arguably more.

You have it backwards.  You really think if we had Cam and the rest of the 49ers offense instead of our own we wouldn't have been much better.  You can only do as much as the personnel you have to work with. I know you will argue like you always do but the reason Gettleman is keeping Shula is he knows the potential with better personnel.  And he has a plan to bring in more guys on offense.  Watch and see.

I was right about Rivera and I will be right about Shula.

I was right about Rivera, I was right about LaFell. I'm gonna be right about J-Stew, and I am probably right about Shula, though I really hope that I 'm not.  We are just wasting time, speculating what Shula would have done with another team's personnel. We can do that with anyone. The more genuine comparison is what he has done with the Panthers' 2013 personnel which was arguably an improved version of the 2012 personnel that his predecessor obviously used more effectively.

And don't give me that crap about our style of offense working in concert to improve our defense. Our defense improved because of coaching, experience, and key additions at positions that were sorely wanting in 2012. All that being said, Shula did less with more (which, in some ways, was a reflection of his body as work as a past OC).

People were always waiting for Brandon Lafell to break out, even though he had already reached his ceiling. I guess we'll have to wait another couple of years, after Shula under-performs, to conclude that we can get someone that can do better with the shiny, new toys before they get rusty and broken.

Yep those rb contracts have really handcuffed us. I could see having one big contract there. But 2? Nothing personal, stew and deangelo are great guys but we now have glaring holes elsewhere that we can't easily fix. Sent from my SPH-D710 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Don't forget the eight million we're paying to Beason next year to play for someone else as well, that we cannot do anything about.

Dave has his work cut out for him, but as a guy who's been around multiple Superbowl winning teams and organizations, I have confidence he has what it takes to make things work, make the tough decisions, and keep our trajectory moving forward come 2014 and beyond.
