???  maybe explain your point.  explain how total points or total yards is more important that TDs per drive and offensive efficiency.

Also, explain to me how, offensive philosophy and efficiency does not directly impact total defensive rankings.

You're just going in circles, like our offense. Take the posts I've already posted and apply them to your retarded questions, then come up with more questions and vague statements adding nothing to discussion.

Looking at seattles dominance there isn't a receiver in there ranks id consider elite and there numbers are aimilar to ours on offense passing wise but they have a well executed run game and rotate lynch/turbin well! There line gives Wilson a lot of time so maybe there is something to gettlemans logic but we still need better receiving corps than what we went into this season with, I'm for giving smitty a year but in the slot, ginn maybe as a #3 but we need a reliable #2 receiver and backup at #4 I liked the few snaps mcnutt had and Tavares King was hyped about by john fox and Peyton manning so give them a real go and don't resign lafell and hixon! We need to move on

I agree that none of their receivers are elite; however, what they do as well as any receiving corps in the NFL is go get the ball.  They bailed Wilson out many, many times this year by going up and making a play on the ball when he threw it up for grabs.  It's what Smitty used to do for Jake when he still had his explosiveness.  It's also something severely lacking in our current group of receivers.

I'm not going to go through 8 pages just to read answers that don't answer my questions.

We were top 10 in the NFL in

TDs per possession (9th)

Points per possession (10th)

TOP per possession (2nd)

Plays per possession (3rd)

TOs per possession (7th)

Drive success rate (5th)

TD/FG ratio (10th)

Red Zone efficiency(8th)

As a result we finished next to last in total offensive possessions, conversely our defense faced the third least amount of possessions.

Now, these stats are 10X more telling than total yards or total points about what a team is actually doing when it has the ball.  Teams with faster paced offenses, or more aggressive passing offenses (which stops the clock more) will have more possessions and therefore more total yards,  but that also translates to more defensive possessions.  Therefore, total yardage and total points may go up with more possessions, but usually there is a correlation between total defense and total defensive points allowed going down or deflating as a result.

So explain how that is looking at it in a vacuum.  Total Yards is a complete vacuum stat.  Literally, it sucks everything up and spits it out in one catch all stat that is not as informative as other stats like the ones above.

So did Gettleman think our o-line would be good in 2013, and that's why he decided not to sign Jake Scott or any of the other FAs? Why is he all concerned about the o-line now after sitting tight with the poo we have, despite everyone knowing they'd be poo?

To be fair, no one else signed Jake Scott either.  From what I remember, a couple of teams kicked the tires on him.

Pretty sure he's done.  Ditto most of the other guys nobody picked up.  Some who were picked up were dumped again in short order.

I don't know if it's so much he thought they were good as just that there was no one much better.

TOP is based on making plays, third downs. Which is why yards are always important. Our TOP is achieved mostly from our sluggish offense taking so much time pre-snap after converting a few yards. TOP can be an important stat, but isn't crucial to having a top defense or offense. The Saints have a high powered offense, and a top five defense as an example.

1996 (TAM): 28th total offense, 22th rushing offense, 29th passing offense

1997 (TAM): 29th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

1998 (TAM): 22nd total offense, 4th rushing offense, 27th passing offense

1999 (TAM): 28th total offense, 15th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

2013 (CAR): 26th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 29th passing offense

This is what I posted, and it shows Shula's ineptness.

I'd like to see a list of highest TOP teams versus records in the last four years. Then maybe a list of highest rated offenses versus records.

You know who had a really good defense this season????

Buffalo.

They may have had just as good a defense as us, Seattle, or San Fransisco.  For real.

But they finished ranked 10th in defensive total yards, and 20th in defensive points allowed.

Why?  Because their offense played up tempo and the led the league in offensive possessions.

The result Buffalo's defense faced 209 defensive possessions.  Most in the league.  37 more possessions than the Carolina Panthers defense faced (172).

That is an example of how dramatically offensive pace, TOP (Buffalo was 31st in TOP per possession), and TDS per drive (Buffalo was 27th in TDs per drive), can effect total defense.

some offenses are made better by the defense. the reverse can also be true.

i think Teeray is saying that the big picture can be seen if you go deeper than just team statistical ranks and i agree.

i believe two of the biggest and most telling stats that show offensive ability are 3rd down and red zone. i don't see how anyone can call shula inept.

That's great, since everyone is suggesting we lower our TOP to last in the league and our offense to less scores.

Compare the best offenses in the league with TOP and their defense.

The Saints are a good example. Using Buffalo as an example of anything is a joke. Especially when the conversation was how to improve our offense.
