Anybody want to guess what happens to our oh so awesome 12-4 record (growl we got a good record this decade accept riveria is awesome sheesh or you don't know the game) if we stumble even a few spots in our defensive rankings next season?

Here's some insight before you think about it: every team that finished behind us in PPG this year failed to make the playoffs.

Even if the defense regresses even slightly-given the turnover it's quite possible-we are a losing team and no amount of d-tier cherry picked statistics are going to change that

Great post! I am one of those over the top responders I guess, the thing I do trut about gettleman is his knowledge of talent, he was that of course before being a gm and he spots talent a mile away! It can't be a coincidence all but one of his draft picks was a success I mean can you really count barner? He has college pedigree and didnt get a lot of looks, so who knows and kugbila got injured but could turn out to be as good as star or kk or Klein, those three were great pick ups and mostly so were the free agents! I trust him to find talent I mean he spotted victor Cruz he was an undrafted free agent so here's hoping, I think the problem for myself and others is the frustration that it's going to be a longer process than wanted because of the cap mess.

I love how so many folks here are going all "Chicken Little" over a press conference where DG has ZERO interest in tipping his hand.... shesh!

What it really comes down to, is that we did not run the ball as effectively as we could late in the season. Going for an OL or two is a great idea because when you can run the ball, everything else opens up. Keep Cam clean and he does a great job. Here's another thing too, every year the draft pundits talk about "Greatest Class ev@r!" for something. Sometimes its right, sometime they aren't. DG is a GM, has been around a well run organization for 30ish years. I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing. He did a great job last year on a shoe string. I expect we'll see more value signings as well.

Who knows what's going to happen, but I do know that a GM isn't going to tip his hand to the other 31 GMs who will try to leverage that into power. I look forward to watching the presser later. But folks need to chill a bit on the "sky is falling" nonsense here. I know it's a passtime for the huddle, but c'mon man, let's grow a little!

So did Gettleman think our o-line would be good in 2013, and that's why he decided not to sign Jake Scott or any of the other FAs? Why is he all concerned about the o-line now after sitting tight with the poo we have, despite everyone knowing they'd be poo?

Wow so our weak offense is what's behind our stellar defense, who would have known his genius.

It's a good thing you win games by scoring more tackles than the other team instead of points.

1996 (TAM): 28th total offense, 22th rushing offense, 29th passing offense

1997 (TAM): 29th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

1998 (TAM): 22nd total offense, 4th rushing offense, 27th passing offense

1999 (TAM): 28th total offense, 15th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

2013 (CAR): 26th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 29th passing offense

That is what you took from that? LOL.

My whole point was talking total stats like that can be misleading.

Total stats usually tell the story. Cherry picking stats is what can be misleading.

I don't know what I find more comical, the vacuum you've created which you ironically accuse me if or that you may actually believe that offense didn't bother to score more points because they didn't need to or whatever other absurd argument you've concocted to continue this charade

"IF YOU UNDERSTOOD THE GAME GROWL LIKE ME YOUD SEE THE OFFENSE DIDNT SCORE MORE BECAUSE TEH DEFENSE WAS JUST SO AMURZIN THST DEY DIDNT HINK IT NECESSARY.

What? Not at all what I was trying to say.

I was saying that there is a correlation to an efficient offense that scores TD on a high % of possessions with a high TOP therefore limiting possesions and a defense that has great numbers. It also results in deflated total offensive yardage and total points which doesn't accurately reflect how well an offense is actually playing

??? What does that even mean?

You do know how high TOP and low possessions deflate total offense right?

Facepalm.

But there's a reason there's only a few TE in the league that's above and beyond everybody else. WR is the much more important. Jimmy 7'0 Graham didnt do squat against Seattle, and V.D although he had a TD pass, Boldin was the man that torched us and Crabtree is the one who torched GB. Boldin also the main reason Ravens won the SB. That is the biggest need along with RB. End of day you need playmakers and steve time is close to being up. Lafail is a fail and Ginn is a number 3

I swear WR is the cursed position on this organization. Any time your number 1 receiver is talking about put him in the slot that's a sign

I find it hard to believe this looks like the tougher situation to pull off than expecting a rookie WR to be anything more than a 3rd option anyway.  Stacking the OL gives you a run game, play action, then Smitty, Olsen, Ginn already taking up most shots down field.  Add a 2nd TE that can stretch the field and you've done more with less.

And I have to say: those examples don't speak much towards your point.  Guys show up/don't show up in games at both positions.  Using one game doesn't say much.  That has less to do with the position and more with the scheme on both your offense and their defense; and at times, maybe even a player's character..

The biggest reason our Oline sucked was the fact we lost 4-5 guys to season ending injuries.  It's hard to blame DG for not gazing into his crystal ball and know that would happen so he could have 5 guards on the practice squad waiting to take their place.    If even half those guys stay healthy we probably look alot better, especially on the interior of the line since most of those guys were interior linemen. Yeah, BB sucked and we all knew that was coming but good cost effective tackles are hard to find and even then if the rest of the oline had been stable Bell might not have looked so bad.  I do expect a new tackle (or two or three) to be on the roster going into next season.

???  maybe explain your point.  explain how total points or total yards is more important that TDs per drive and offensive efficiency.

Also, explain to me how, offensive philosophy and efficiency does not directly impact total defensive rankings.
