Between free agency and the draft we can address both the OL & WR corp. Gettleman isn't an idiot. If he's talking openly about competing with the 49ers & Seahawks, he damn sure realizes we need an upgrade at WR.

there will be some good names out there, i think we can fill all the necessary holes this year.  we are in much better position this year to succeed than last year, although so fools think somebody can fix everything with limited resources.

He was supposed to fill the holes last year in the same areas. It didn't exactly work out as both areas were huge concerns all year.

I don't think he anticipated being Super Bowl contenders this year. He addressed our biggest need last year (DT) and we're set there for years to come now as a result.

GM's go about filling holes differently when they know the team is a legit contender. He talked openly there about competing with the 49ers/Seahawks and needing to match their OL's, but you can believe he knows we need more playmakers at WR too.

Which is cheaper and available - FA vet receivers with something left in the tank or FA vet o lineman?  I think that will determine what our draft plans will be.  This team needs to be super frugal for the next couple of years and spend its limited budget wisely.

Free agent receivers rarely wind up being worth their contracts.

Would rather get linemen in free agency and draft receivers.

Looking at seattles dominance there isn't a receiver in there ranks id consider elite and there numbers are aimilar to ours on offense passing wise but they have a well executed run game and rotate lynch/turbin well! There line gives Wilson a lot of time so maybe there is something to gettlemans logic but we still need better receiving corps than what we went into this season with, I'm for giving smitty a year but in the slot, ginn maybe as a #3 but we need a reliable #2 receiver and backup at #4 I liked the few snaps mcnutt had and Tavares King was hyped about by john fox and Peyton manning so give them a real go and don't resign lafell and hixon! We need to move on

Every team Shula has been OC for has seen a significant rise in defensive YPG and PPG when he came and a significant drop in defensive performance when he left.

Coincidence?,

4 of his 5 years as an OC no team's defense has ranked below 3rd in the NFL in YPG or 5th in PPG.

The one year his team didn't they improved from 27th on defense to 11th from the year before he was there.

The offense directly correlates to the defense being dominate.

i'm beginning to see this is the thread where all the spastic guys are just ranting and not much room for real thought or good discussion

Prior to D.G. the dl wasn't competing and we couldn't stop the run.  He fixed that problem, and the defense carried us to the playoffs.  That's after one year.  The guy added an ol in the draft, that got injuried.  You can't count him out and he brought in multiple udfa's. We didn't have that many picks plus he brought in Ginn and Hixon.  The man did what he could with a cap situation that was a mess.

You can't fix everything in one year.  The guy said it's process and what he added helped us compete.  Now this year is D.G. 2.0 which means he will help us compete on offense by starting up front hopefully.  To me, it seems like it's going to take 3 years to get us exactly where we need to be.

He was supposed to fill the holes last year in the same areas. It didn't exactly work out as both areas were huge concerns all year.

I love how so many folks here are going all "Chicken Little" over a press conference where DG has ZERO interest in tipping his hand.... shesh!

What it really comes down to, is that we did not run the ball as effectively as we could late in the season.  Going for an OL or two is a great idea because when you can run the ball, everything else opens up.  Keep Cam clean and he does a great job.  Here's another thing too, every year the draft pundits talk about "Greatest Class ev@r!" for something.  Sometimes its right, sometime they aren't.  DG is a GM, has been around a well run organization for 30ish years.  I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing.  He did a great job last year on a shoe string.  I expect we'll see more value signings as well.

Who knows what's going to happen, but I do know that a GM isn't going to tip his hand to the other 31 GMs who will try to leverage that into power.  I look forward to watching the presser later.  But folks need to chill a bit on the "sky is falling" nonsense here.  I know it's a passtime for the huddle, but c'mon man, let's grow a little!

Well that's up to what Gettleman has seen in FA.  People automatically assume WR is the biggest need on offense but really a 2nd TE capable of stretching the field will do just as well for the offense to operate.  Ginn will be back, he's a fine route runner and his hands haven't been as suspect as people say.  At that point, you don't have to hit a homerun on a future #1 receiver, you can then look for a 3rd WR who is then just a 4th option.

Panthers OL is in shambles.  Gettleman is going to have to find 3 solid OL this year.  By all means, use FA..  but if the prospects are there, I won't be mad if they go with younger players they feel have major upside.

But there's a reason there's only a few TE in the league that's above and beyond everybody else. WR is the much more important. Jimmy 7'0 Graham didnt do squat against Seattle, and V.D although he had a TD pass, Boldin was the man that torched us and Crabtree is the one who torched GB. Boldin also the main reason Ravens won the SB. That is the biggest need along with RB. End of day you need playmakers and steve time is close to being up. Lafail is a fail and Ginn is a number 3

I swear WR is the cursed position on this organization. Any time your number 1 receiver is talking about put him in the slot that's a sign

Lol at looking at things in a vacuum and not understanding how one side of the ball effects the other.

I don't know what I find more comical, the vacuum you've created which you ironically accuse me if or that you may actually believe that offense didn't bother to score more points because they didn't need to or whatever other absurd argument you've concocted to continue this charade

"IF YOU UNDERSTOOD THE GAME GROWL LIKE ME YOUD SEE THE OFFENSE DIDNT SCORE MORE BECAUSE TEH DEFENSE WAS JUST SO AMURZIN THST DEY DIDNT HINK IT NECESSARY.

Wow so our weak offense is what's behind our stellar defense, who would have known his genius.

It's a good thing you win games by scoring more tackles than the other team instead of points.

1996 (TAM): 28th total offense, 22th rushing offense, 29th passing offense

1997 (TAM): 29th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

1998 (TAM): 22nd total offense, 4th rushing offense, 27th passing offense

1999 (TAM): 28th total offense, 15th rushing offense, 30th passing offense

2013 (CAR): 26th total offense, 11th rushing offense, 29th passing offense

Wow those stats are gross, nothing top 10?  That's pretty ugly.  If R.R. chooses to keep Shula, then he lives by the gun, hopefully his Panthers career doesn't die by the gun.

12-4 sounds good to me. Hell, look at San Fran, they can't get the final goal either.

12-4 is exceptional, but I know what's about to follow.
